Bottcher Lone Canadian Men's Rink Booked into Slam Playoffs
![]() Calgary's Brendan Bottcher (photo: Stan Fong, Hardline) will be joined by the winner of Saturday's tiebreaker between Brad Gushue and Matt Dunstone in the WFG Masters Quarterfinals. A minor hiccup for Bottcher and his team based out of The Glencoe Club in Calgary of Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert seems now far in the rearview mirror after going winless at the Hearing Life Tour Challenge. Bottcher went 4-0 through the round-robin at third stop of the Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling series, held at Sixteen Mile Sports Centre in Oakville, Ontario. Bottcher opened with a 6-5 win over Marco Hoesli of Switzerland, then won 9-4 over Calgary rivals skipped by Kevin Koe. Bottcher came out Thursday wiht a 7-4 win over Saskatoon's Colton Flasch and then finished the sweep off with a 5-4 win over Team Edin, with Oskar Eriksson continuing to skip the team. With seven of the eight playoff berths settle, Bottcher is the long Canadian team to book their spot into the playoff, a shocking turn as the youthful European teams appear to be taking over Canadian strength of depth. On the same side of the bracket, Italy's Joel Retornaz will playing Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller while Eriksson and Team Edin takes on Norway's Magnus Ramsfjell. In the last of the quartefinals, Ross Whyte and Bruce Mouat will do face off in a battle of Scottish rinks. Men's Quarterfinals go Saturday at 11:30 am ET and can be watched on Sportsnet with their 'Around-The-Rings' coverage. |
