Grand Slam Adds New Rule Ahead of CO-OP Tour Challenge
![]() Bruce Mouat (photo: Grand Slam of Curling), enter the CO-OP Tour Challenge as defending champs and will look to defend their title October 14-19 in Nisku, Alta. By Meredith McCullum, In an attempt to increase curling's entertainment value, a rule change has been installed at the upcoming CO-OP Tour Challenge in Nisku, Alta., limiting teams to a maximum of one blank end per game. If a team blanks a second end, the other team will be given hammer. The rule change comes after The Curling Group purchased the Grand Slam of Curling with a desire to help innovate the game. In an interview with the Grand Slam of Curling's John Hodge, The Curling Group's co-founder and CEO, Nic Sulsky, gave his take on the rule. "Allowing teams to only have one blank per game is going to eliminate (the intentional first-end blank)," said Sulsky. "A team is going to want to keep that (blank) in their back pocket." "I don't foresee a future where we will eliminate blanks. I personally like the idea of one per team. I think it's a fair compromise, but if another idea pops up that seems like an interesting one to test to make the game more exciting, more fun for the casual sports fan, then we'll totally look at it." The CO-OP Tour Challenge kicks off October 14 with the first draw at 9 a.m. Mountain Time (MT). The second Grand Slam event of the year will see a stacked field of teams including last year's champs Kerri Einarson and Bruce Mouat. Rachel Homan and Matt Dunstone are coming in as champions of the AMJ Masters a few weeks ago. Scores will be available at curlingzone.com, and games can be streamed on the Grand Slam of Curling streaming service, Rock Channel. |
