Maybe I missed something because my sound had to be muted watching early in the morning, but why did they get stuffed animals and not medals? Are they doing an actual medal ceremony at some point?

Yes, medals at special time and location towards end of day. Stuffed toy in lieu of the traditional flowers.

The international broadcasters said that there's a separate Medal Plaza where they're doing the medal ceremonies at a later time. Tomorrow, I think. And I think it's being used for most events.
iirc, Sochi had a similar set-up.

And frankly, it's a terrible idea. Ruins the immediacy of the moment and gives way too much time for the shock/emotions to fade.

Happy Day for Cdn Curling. We ought to keep reminding viewers that *both* Lawes and Morris lost their MxDbls partners (Kennedy and Homan) to the Olympics trad game, so were left in the lurch. I bet that credit goes to Stoughton for assuring that this teamup happened for Portage. I heard the "free agent recruitment" version out of Morris's mouth a couple of times, but uhm, no. Good on Lawes for her demeanor. Good on Morris for his restraint. Haha. So Glad for them both.
I think the "free agent" story is because Lawes/Kennedy actually didn't qualify for the mixed doubles Olympic trials - not enough points. Morris/Homan did, so it was Morris who was looking for a player at the trials.

This is where their Olympic experience came into play. Even when Switzerland was looking pretty good in 6, Morris and Lawes came through.
All of those rude comments about Kaitlyn in the SF yesterday - she played well today. And yes, I am bringing this person into play but there was a lovely photo of Kaitlyn and Jennifer on twitter yesterday. I'm sure seeing Jennifer was a boost for Kaitlyn.

Canada's first endeavor into the Olympic's Mixed Doubles should make Canada very proud.
From a broad Canadian prospective the really good news about their success, however, is that we have at least 4 or 5 other teams that are equally talented. Talented enough not just to compete but to win on the international stage right now!

Congrats to John and Kaitlyn on their gold medal. So proud of them. Also, congrats to Jeff Stoughton for his direction. Congrats also to Teams Switz and OAR. Up early this a.m. to watch this game and enjoyed it completely. Looking forward to the medal presentation.

I wonder if they get to stay and watch the rest of the Olympics now or if you get kicked out of the village once your event is over.

Love to see what I'm calling a "MIXED DOUBLES BRIER" every year.
Due to shortness of games and only 5 rocks per game I could envisage 20 teams - 11 or 12 representing each province or territory plus TOP 7 or 8 invites.
Could be an interesting, fan-friendly and promotable event that could easily draw 800 to 1500 per draw - perhaps 2,000 or more to semi-finals and finals.
Perhaps Jeff Stoughton should start advocating this - on the cusp of Lawes & Morris bringing such attention to this alternative curling sport.
Umm they already have that each year...its called the Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and has about 24 teams...maybe it will get a big title sponsor now.

This year, the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championships is at the end of March in Leduc Alberta: http://www.curling.ca/blog/2017/03/...nships-in-2018/
The winner goes to Oestersund Sweden third week for April for the 2018 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships. I do hope the get a title sponsor. Mixed Drinks? Mixed Tapes? Doubles? Lots of tie-ins.

Nothing new about Kate crumbing like a house of cards when the real pressure is on. She has always been that way which is why I don't know why Jones keeps her. She looks like a deer in the headlights when the heats on. Give Johnny Mo the credit for keeping them in the game and handing Kate. I really hope Jones keeps the new kid and hands Kate her walking papers.

Russian Bronze Medalist flunks drug test
The male half of the Russian mixed doubles pair that won bronze has tested positive for meldonium. It's the same formerly-legal-now-it-isn't drug that got Maria Sharapova suspended from tennis a few years ago.

Yeah, only giving them 2 years notice is hardly enough warning... except Wada banned it in 2015 and officially banned it 2016. It appears it is used to transport more oxygen to the muscles when used by athletes. Similar to blood doping.

Doping
Assuming the B test confirms that the Russians were running modified instead of stock, two conclusions come to mind:
Norway should get the Bronze.
China should have been in the playoffs. Too late to remedy this.
If the IOC had any cojones they would send the Russians home today.

How does an athlete not know? Norway gets bronze. Bad for China. Probably bad for couple's relationship too. Innocent until proven guilty - but pendulum has swung. #whyCurling?! #OhWhy?!

in mixed you might be able to jump up and dust the rock a few strokes - knowing that you are doing nothing much anyway on most shots
It helps the body recover quicker after exercise . Could have been in his system from before competition start.

Why why would this story be out when it is subject to confirmation of a second test? Seems rediculous .

I thought all the Russians were tested before they were allowed to compete.....because they were the CLEAN ones.
