![]() Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone won two tiebreaker games, then the round of 12 and quarterfinals to reach Monday's semifinals at the Nufloor Penticton Curling Classic. Dunstone with B.J. Neufeld at third, Colton Lott and Ryan Harnden on the front end won 6-5 over Winnipeg's Reid Carruthers on Sunday evening in the quarterfinals. After Carruthers blanked the first two end, Dunstone stole a poin in the third end, then scored two in the fifth end and stole two more in the sixth end for a 5-2 lead. Carruthers bounced back with three in the seventh end, leading to an interesting eighth end that saw Neufeld's brush break on an early sweep, where he fell hard and burned the rock. Watch the fall here: Immediately, Carruthers looked at the situation as to where that rock should end up, rather than being removed as was within their rights. Neufeld looked shaken on the play, but stayed in the game and added his own highlight reel shot with a triple peel to open the middle and allow Dunstone the easy point in the eighth end for the win. Neufeld's Triple Peel clearing shot: In the other three quarterfinals games, John Shuster (Duluth, MN) defeated Mike McEwen (Saskatoon, SK) 5-1, Brendan Bottcher (Calgary, AB) defeated Cameron de Jong (Penticton, BC) 7-3, and Glenn Howard (Penetanguishene, ON) defeated Aaron Sluchinski (Airdrie, AB) 7-6. In Monday's semifinals, Dunstone faces Shuster and Bottcher plays Howard for a spot into the championship final playing at 12:30 pm Pacific Time (3:30 pm ET).
Dunstone needed tiebreakers to advance to the playoffs, defeating Daniel Casper (Chaska, MN) 4-3, then won against Riku Yanagisawa (Karuizawa, JPN) 4-3 to book one of the last two spots available. Victoria's Catlin Schneider defeated Marco Hoelsi 6-2 after Hoesli won 4-2 over Korea's Jongduk Park in the first round of games. Dunstone won 9-3 against Brent Pierce of New Westminster, BC in the Round of 12 playoff. Dunstone has a career record of 31 wins and 14 losses in 6 appearances at the Nufloors Penticton Curling Classic. Dunstone finished 3-2 in the 30-team round-robin pool qualifying round. In their opening game, Dunstone defeated Michael Brunner (Bern, SUI) 6-1, then won 9-1 against Jeff Berg (Vancouver, BC). From there, Dunstone had a couple hiccups, losing 8-4 against de Jong, then dropping a 5-2 decision to John Epping (Toronto, ON).
