Estonia beats the U.S. in crucial game

With only three draws remaining in Group B, Estonia's Marie Kaldvee and Harri Lill took on the United States' Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin in Draw 14 at the Willie O'Ree Place in Fredericton, New Brunswick. With the States at 5-1 and the Estonians at 4-2, the game was crucial in determining the teams that will move onto the playoffs out of the pool.

Things got off to a strong start for the Americans as they managed to steal one in the opening end. This was matched by Estonia who got one in the second before the U.S. replied with one more in the third.

The first multi-point score came in the fourth where Kaldvee and Lill took two for their first lead of the game. Thiesse and Dropkin then scored one in five to knot the scoring up again at three all.

A flash by Thiesse on her last rock in the sixth left the door open for Kaldvee to draw for three and double the score, going ahead 6-3. The mistake, however, was then repaid in the seventh end when the States had an open hit for three right back. Heading to eight, the score sat tied at six with Estonia holding the pivotal last stone.

Facing one on her last rock, Marie Kaldvee succeeded in removing the U.S. stone from scoring position, counting one and giving Estonia a big 7-6 win on day 5 of the competition.

Currently ranked number one in the world, Kaldvee and Lill Estonia's first world curling title this week in Fredericton. Last year, the team won the silver medal, becoming the first Estonian team to reach the podium. Now at 5-2, they are within striking distance of returning to the playoffs for a third consecutive year.

With two games remaining, Estonia faces Norway and Czechia, two teams below them in the standings. A win in either will be near enough to clinch the playoffs while a loss in either, particularly to Norway (4-3), may see them have an early exit.
