By: Cameron Sallaj Italy's dream team duo is back on top on the world stage as Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner reigned supreme in their return. Having not played together since the 2022 Winter Olympics, the team never missed a beat this week in Fredericton, winning all eleven of their games including Saturday's final over Scotland. A slow start to the game saw neither side able to generate offense. Italy opened with one in the first before Scotland's Jenn Dodds and Bruce Mouat got one back in the second. The Italians were then forced again in the third, making it a 2-1 game. In the fourth, a miscue by Mouat on his runback allowed Constantini to draw in and put the pressure on Dodds. Needing the side of the button to limit the damage, the Scotts came up short on their draw attempt, allowing Italy to steal two and lead the game 4-1 at the break. Another stolen end in five brought the Italian lead to 5-1. This did not mean the game was over, however, as with the power play in six, Dodds and Mouat generated three points to bring the game back within one with two ends left to play. Despite their best efforts, it would all be in vain for Scotland as Stefania Constantini executed a perfect runback to count four in the seventh end and secure the win for her side, 9-4 the final score. The win for Constantini and Mosaner marks a twenty-second consecutive win on the world stage. The pair went undefeated through the Olympic Games three years ago and added eleven more wins with their title performance this week. It also marked Italy's first medal at the World Mixed Doubles Championship with their previous best performance being fifth in 2021. Also up for grabs from the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Championship was Olympic qualifying points to qualify countries for the Milano-Cortina games next year. With the conclusion of the event, eight teams: Estonia, Sweden, Italy, Great Britain, Norway, Canada, Switzerland and the United States have all clinched an Olympic berth while the rest of the countries will compete in the last chance qualifying event for the final two spots. |
