![]() Calgary's Kevin Koe defeated Saskatoon's Rylan Kleiter 6-3 in Monday's Final at the Pidherny Centre in Red Deer. It's third time's a charm for Koe and his team with Tyler Tardi at third, Jacques Gauthier at second and Karrick Martin at lead as they won the final game for the first time this season. Koe was previously runner-up at the ATB Okotoks Classic in September and again at the Insitu Players Open in October. Starting with hammer, Koe scored 1 in the first end, then forced Kleiter to a single in the second end. Koe scored 2 in the third end, again forcing Kleiter to a single with hammer in the fourth end. Leading 3-2, Koe scored a single in the fifth end, then added a steal of 2 in the sixth end to extend the lead to four points. Kleiter scored a single in the seventh end, but it was not enough as Koe finished with the 6-3 win. Koe takes home the $10,000CDN first place cheque along with 45.000 World Curling Federation World Team Ranking points, while Kleiter receives $7,000CDN and 33.000 world ranking points for their second place finish. Koe improved his career record at the Pumps and Pressure Red Deer Curling Classic to 28 wins and 6 losses in this his 5th appearance, winning his second title after also winning the 2016 edition. For Tardi and Gauthier it was their first win at the Red Deer Curling Classic while Martin makes it three wins having previously won in 2017, and 2012. In the semifinals, Koe defeated Winnipeg's Mike McEwen 4-3 and Kleiter defeated Edmonton's Karsten Sturmay 6-5. McEwen and Sturmay earned $4,000CDN and 25.500 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Koe defeated Japan's Riku Yanagisawa 6-5, while McEwen defeated South Korea's Jongduk Park 4-2, Kleiter eliminated Aaron Sluchinski of Airdrie in a 7-2 decision, and Sturmay defeated Japan's Yusuke Morozumi 5-3. With the win, Koe jumped from 22nd to 7th overall on the Year-To-Date rankings, the numbers used to start the next season's rankings and the total that qualifies teams for the end of season Grand Slam of Curling Players' Championship. Kleiter jumps into the top 20 overall with their runner-up finish. Koe went undefeated through the A-event bracket in the 24-team triple qualifying round. In their opening game, Koe defeated Ryan Parent (Calgary) 9-2, then won 6-5 against Kleiter to advance to the A-Qualifier game where they won 7-2 against Morozumi to advance to the playoff round. |
