By: Cameron Sallaj Coming off a semifinal finish last weekend at the Baden Masters, Stirling's Ross Whyte rink is continuing their dominant performance at this weekend's Euro Super Series. On Thursday, the team won both its games to sit atop Group B after the first day of competition. The Scottish team, comprised of Whyte, Robin Brydone, Duncan McFadzean, and Euan Kyle got off to a quick start in Draw 1 against Humber College's Jacob Dobson rink, the lone Canadian team competing overseas this weekend. Team Whyte swiped a quick three points in the first end before adding two more in the third for an early 5-1 lead. They took one more point in four for a five-point lead at the halfway point. The Canadian team was not done fighting, however, as Dobson was able to tack a three spot on the board in the fifth to bring the game within two. The Scotts regained control the next end with two points in the sixth followed by a steal of one in the seventh to secure a dominant 9-4 win in their opening game. In their second game of the day, the team was tested by Germany's Benny Kapp rink from Fussen. The two rinks traded deuces through the first three ends with the Whyte rink taking a 4-2 lead. In the fourth, the Germans broke things open with a four spot to take their first lead of the game 6-4. Team Whyte kept things close with a deuce in the fifth to tie things up. After Kapp blanked the sixth, they only managed to score one in the seventh to go up one. The Scotts then counted two points in the eighth for a narrow 8-7 victory. Looking ahead to tomorrow, Team Whyte have two more round robin games before the playoff round begins Saturday night. They will face Andreas Harstad (0-1; Oppdal, NOR) at 8:30 AM British Time before going up against Michael Brunner (2-0; Bern, SUI) at 4:30 PM BT. The top eight teams through the twenty-team preliminary round will qualify for the playoffs. Watch live action and replays from the Euro Super Series on Recast: https://the.recast.app/home. |
