MacMillan/Middleton win Summer Series Doubles

Vancouver's Kayla MacMillan and Sterling Middleton win the Mixed Doubles title at the Saguenay Summer Series in Saguenay, Quebec.

MacMillan/Middleton won the final in a one-sided game against Montreal's Emily Riley and Jesse Mullen, where the reigning Quebec champions shook hands after falling behind 8-0 in 4 ends.

MacMillan and Middleton left with a $4,700 first prize cheque and now lead the way in the race for the Canadian Olympic Mixed Doubles trials.

For MacMillan and Middleton, the Summer Series marked their debut as a team, with Middleton playing last season with Emily Bowles, having won the Victoria Mixed Doubles back home in British Columbia.

Interestingly, MacMillan and Middleton won their ticket to the final against Clancy Grandy and Catlin Schneider, their respective skips in women's and men's fours play, with the game going to an extra end won on a measure after an amazing angle-raise takeout.

"We are proud and extremely happy with the quality of ice we are offering in the middle of summer," said Veronique Bouchard of Curling Saguenay.

"It is challenging, but our ice techs were up to the task. We had a very strong field, and we would not be surprised to see almost half of the teams playing in their respective national championships."

After hosting junior and senior competitions the previous weekend, the Saguenay Summer Series continues with men's and women's competitions this weekend.

"The city of Saint-Felicien is very proud of hosting this event that has an extraordinary economic impact for our city and for the region," said Luc Gibbons, mayor of Saint-Felicien.

"We are impressed that so many players from across Canada and abroad came to our city, and we are happy that they can discover its beauty and the warmth of its citizens."
