![]() Laura Walker of Edmonton and Kirk Muyres of Regina head into their second season dedicating to the Mixed Doubles game. Walker and Muyres currently join 15 other teams schedule to play at the St. Vital Mixed Doubles NISO Classic, hosted at the St. Vital Curling Club in Winnipeg from August 24 to 27. The pair finished 5th overall on the World Curling Federation World Team Rankings last season with a 35-13 record over 8 events together. Walker/Muyres won the Curling Stadium Alberta Curling Series Doubles 1 last September, then going on to reach the final in three events, including the Mixed Doubles Super Series events in Carleton Place and Saskatoon, along with the MadTown DoublesDown in Madison, Wisconsin. Walker/Muyres added three quarterfinals finishes as well, missing the playoff round only once on the season. The St. Vital Mixed Doubles NISO Classic is still accepting teams for the event, aiming for a fieild of 20-24 teams, with 16 teams currently registered for a $12,000 CDN prize purse. Reigning Canadian champions and #1 world ranked Jennifer Jones and Brent Laing of Barrie, Ontario headline the field, with #14 Chaelynn Kitz and Brayden Stewart of Saskatoon joined by Tyrel Griffith of Vernon, BC playing with Jennifer Armstrong and starting the season ranking 15th overall. Dawn and Mike McEwen of Winnipeg are in the field, after playing a single event last season at the Manitoba Mixed Doubles Curling Tour Championship last spring. For Tour organizer Steven Michaleski, the St. Vital event is a culmination of three years of work on the Manitoba Mixed Doubles Tour, working to build a series of viable events that allow teams to train and compete in the sport's newest Olympic discipline. With the Olympic Trials for Mixed Doubles only 17 months away, the battle for points will get heated as teams attempt to qualify for the 16 spots available. Registration is open for another few days, with the draw expected to be released on August 15.
