![]() ST. FELICIEN - Halifax's Christina Black opens their season in August at the Saguenay Summer Series. Black, and her team of Jenn Baxter, Karlee Everist and Shelley Barker finished last season with a 41-12 record, putting them within reach of quaifying for the first Grand Slam of Curling evnet of the season, at the Tour Challenge in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Black counted all 8 of their events played last season, winning four events, including the Nova Scotia Scotties, advancing to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Nationals in Kamloops, where the team bowed out in the Page 3v4 game. The 4th place finish gave Black their highest point total of the season, riding a strong finish to sit 17th overall on the end-of-season WCF World Team Rankings. Black will open their schedule on August 24th at the Centre Marianne St-Gelais in St. Felicien, Quebec, against Montreal's Kelsey Boyd, then plays Leanne Fortin of Saguenay, Quebec. Black finishes their round-robin with games against Montreal's Lauren Horton and Danielle Inglis of Ottawa. Inglis, ranking #24 overall is chasing a spot in the Tour Challenge Tier 2 event themselves, are seeding third overall in the event, with 17th-ranked Isabelle Ladouceur of Dundas, Ontario also on the outside playing early events to try and book a place into the Tier 1 Slam. Inglis, joined by Kira Brunton at third, Calissa Daly and Cassandra de Groot on the front end reached finals at the Stu Sells Brantford Nissan Classic and the North Grenville Women's Fall Classic, went on to finish third at the Ontario Scotties last January. Ladouceur with Grace Lloyd at third, Jamie Smith and Rachel Steele on the front end had a disappointing finish at the Ontario Scotties, missing the playoffs, winning two games in pool play, did have a breakout season, winniing three events, defeating Inglis in the fial in North Grenville, along with picking up title wins at the Stroud Sleeman Cash Spiel and the Gord Carroll Classic in Whitby. Ladouceur, also reached the final of the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard, springboarding the team up the rankings and into their first Slam appearance in January. Laurie St-Georges of Montreal, Lauren Mann playing out of Timmins, Ontario and Melissa Adams of Fredericton, New Brunswick round out the top 6 ranked teams in this 13-team field, part of the Saguenay Summer Series - a month long celebration of curling. The Summer Seriesis a series of 7 competitions (5 international, one senior and one open) presented annually in the arena, in Saint-Felicien, for 3 weeks. The categories of the 5 international competitions are: Women, Men, Mixed Doubles, U21-women and U21-men. The annual schedule also includes: training camps and free trials for the local curling leagues. |
