![]() CORNWALL, ON - Winnipeg's Jennifer Jones will bring her team of young guns to defend her title in Cornwall in September. "We are very excited to announce the return of the Shorty," said Kevin Baker of the Cornwall Curling Club. "The Shorty is loved by both curlers and fans alike. We expect to have a tough time trimming down the invite list to 48 teams." Last run in September 2019, where Jones and her team of Kaitlyn Lawes, Jocelyn Peterman and Dawn McEwen took down Sudbury's Tracy Fleury 6-4 in the final. Jones comes back to Cornwall with a new squad, this the second year together with Karlee Burgess, Emily Zacharias and Lauren Lenentine. Jones played as a five-player squad last season, with Mackenzie Zacharias taking a break from curling to leave the team as a traditional four-player lineup. Jones (#6) is joined by Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni, the top-seed in the tournament and #2 ranked on the WCF World Team Rankings, along with 2018 Olympic Silver medalists Eunjung Kim and #5-ranked Eun ji Gim of Korea. 11th ranked Clancy Grandy of Vancouver, Isabelle Ladouceur of Dundas and Danielle Inglis of Ottawa round out the first Canadian teams announced along with Korea's Seungyoun Ha, Rebecca Morrison of Scotland, and Sayaka Yoshimura of Japan. 14 more teams will be announced following the August 1st registration deadline, with a handful of spots remaining available in both the women's and men's editions. Related: The Shorty Returns! The 2023 edition of the Shorty Jenkins Classic will mark the sixth year that the event has been held in Cornwall. The tournament is held at the Cornwall Curling Centre on the banks of the St. Lawrence River with the action starting on Wednesday, September 19th and the semi-finals and finals taking place on Sunday, September 24th. "The Shorty is always one of the most popular sporting events of the year and it attracts fans from Ottawa, Montreal and beyond," said Kevin Lajoie, Tourism Officer with the City of Cornwall.
