![]() Calgary's Kevin Koe (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) put his stamp on another brilliant comeback scoring three in the last end to win 5-4 over Switzerland's Yannick Schwaller. Koe, with his team of Tyler Tardi, Bradley Thiessen and Karrick Martin, took down their first Slam title together, reaching the final in three other Tour events this season. The game opened well for the Swiss side, with Schwaller and his team with Benoit Schwarz throwing fourth stones and Sven Michel and Pablo Lachat on the front end holding Koe to a single in the first end, then scoring two in the second end to take the early lead. After a blank in the third end, Schwaller stole the fourth end to end the lead to 3-1. Koe was held to a single in the fifth end to trail 3-2, with Schwaller scoring another point to go up 4-2 after six ends, setting up another brilliant finish from the Alberta skip. For Thiessen, the excitement for the win was evident, a fist pump and leap of joy following Koe's brilliant last rock to score three points and the win. The foursome won the Alberta Boston Pizza Cup, their lone title before the Players' Championship win. Thiessen will be stepping back from the sport this offseason, with Jacques Gauthier joining the team at second stones. Koe also scored three in the final end in the semifinals to defeat Brad Gushue of St. John's 7-6, while Schwaller won 5-3 over Italy's Joel Retornaz. In the quarterfinals, Koe defeated Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone 5-3 and Schwaller won 6-5 over defeated Edin 6-5. In their opening game, Koe defeated Brendan Bottcher (Calgary, AB) 6-5, then went on to lose 7-3 to Gushue. Koe responded with a 9-5 win over Norway's Magnus Ramsfjell then won 8-2 against Korey Dropkin of the United States. Koe finished with a 6-5 win against Edin in their final qualifying round match. |
