Fry announces departure from curling

Ryan Fry (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) tweeted on Tuesday that he is stepping away from the sport of curling.

14-time Brier participant and 2014 Olympic gold medalist Ryan Fry has seemingly announced he is stepping away from the game. The current Team McEwen third took to Twitter on Tuesday to share the following statement: "What a ride it has been. An athlete never fully knows when it's time to quit because the true meaning of being an athlete is to never give up. I love curling with all my heart; it saved me so many times."

Fry went on to say that curling "taught [him] that anything is possible if you work your hardest at something and that success is measured by effort."

It was near the end of the seven-tweet thread where Fry shared the news of his departure from the game: "I plan to continue striving for excellence in the sport and hope to do my part to leave it in a better place than when I started. I may even stay in game shape just in case some top team needs a trained assassin to fill in occasionally.

"I wish you all the best & hope our paths cross soon. All the love, Ryan."

Fry made his Brier debut in 2007, playing third for Jeff Stoughton's Team Manitoba Hamilton, contributing to the team's third-place finish. The Winnipeg native, who currently resides in Pickering, has appeared in 14 editions of the men's national championship, winning the event in 2013 as part of Brad Jacobs' Team Northern Ontario.

Before making his mark as one of the game's strongest thirds, Fry was actually a skip, leading Team Manitoba at the 1996 and 1997 Canadian Junior Curling Championships.

In the wake of Tuesday's announcement, tributes have begun to pour in from throughout the curling world, including Fry's former skip and 2014 Olympic teammate Brad Jacobs. "Love you, brother! Been through the highest of highs and lowest of lows with you and cherished every minute," Jacobs tweeted.

As of this writing, Fry's current rink, Team McEwen, has yet to announce its plans for next season. Just before the team competed at the 2023 Ontario Tankard in Port Elgin, where they won the right to represent the province at the Brier in London, Mcewen's rink parted ways with member Jonathan Beuk, replacing him with Joey Hart.

It is unknown if McEwen, Heart, and second Brett Laing will continue with a new third, or whether the entire team is breaking up.

At the 2023 Tim Horton's Brier in London, Fry and Team McEwen qualified for the playoffs, defeating Kevin Koe's team Alberta in the page-playoff qualification draw, before eventually falling to Brendan Bottcher in the 3v4 playoff game.

Fry is currently the coach for Ontario's Team Homan.
