Ottawa's Rachel Homan (photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) won 6-3 over Jessie Hunkin in Quarterfinals. With Homan as team captain and throwing fourth stones, Tracy Fleury skips and throws third stones. Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes round out the foursome on the front end. A recent decision by the World Curling Federation to drop the restriction that teams be named after their skip allows teams to name their team after any player designated as captain of the team. For Homan, the name is vital for attracting sponsors and attention, having been built up since her and Miskew broke onto the scene as 15-year olds defeating Jennifer Jones twice in a tour spiel. Homan scored two in second end, then stole another point in the third end to lead 3-0 early on Hunkin, and her team of Kristen Steifel, Becca Hebert and Dayna Demmans of Spruce Grove, Alberta. The teams traded singles in the fourth and fifth ends, with Hunkin closing the gap to a single point (4-3) with a pair in the sixth end. Homan got their deuce back and then ran Hunkin out of stone for the 6-3 win. Homan advances to the semifinals, where they will face Tabitha Peterson of the United States. Japan's Satsuki Fujisawa will play Casey Scheidegger in the other semifinal matchup, set to begin at 12:30 pm MT (2:30 pm ET). Fujisawa won 6-4 over Regina's Amber Holland, while Scheidegger doubled up Team Lawes, with Selena Njegovan at the helm. Peterson won 5-4 over Sweden's Isabella Wrana in the last of four quarterfinal matches played Monday morning in Red Deer. |
