Epping Continues Strong Start to Season at AMJ Masters
![]() John Epping (Photo: Curling Canada) has qualified for the 2025 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, set to begin November in Halifax, Nova Scotia. By Meredith McCullum Skip John Epping, along with vice Jacob Horgan, second Tanner Horgan and lead Ian MacMillan, earned a berth by finishing as the top-ranked team on the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) for the 2023-2025 period that had not already qualified. Team Epping enters the 2025-26 season ranked #5 in the CTRS and #9 in the world. With only ten Brier appearances between all four players, the Northern Ontario based squad has far less experience at national events than many of the other teams they will face at the Trials. Epping himself got bronze at the 2025 Canadian Mixed Doubles Olympic Trials and hopes to improve on that result in the four-player discipline. The Epping rink has seen high levels of success over the last few years and is off to a strong start in the 2025-26 season. Epping has qualified for the playoffs in each of his three events so far this season. Epping played in the Trentino World Cup in Italy, losing to the eventual champion Yannick Schwaller in the semifinal. Trentino World Cup Semifinal: Epping vs Schwaller The team followed it up with a quarterfinal finish at the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, losing to the eventual runner up Korey Dropkin. Epping's third event of the season saw the team crowned champions of the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic. After an undefeated round robin and wins in both the semis and quarterfinals, Epping got another chance against Schwaller in the championship final and won. Epping is currently competing in the Grand Slam of Curling's AMJ Masters. His first game was a loss to Sept. 23 Scotland's Ross Whyte in the second draw of the event. The teams traded singles most of the game, but a huge score of 3 in the fourth end and a steal in the eighth gave Whyte the victory. Epping faces Alberta's Brad Jacobs next on Sept. 24 at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). Epping then faces Saskatchewan's Ryan Kleiter on Sept. 25. Sept. 26 will see a crossover day between pools for all teams, with matchups yet to be determined. Playoffs begin Sept. 27 with the men's final at 11 a.m. ET on Sept 28.
