Black Holds On for Opening Win
![]() Nova Scotia's Christina Black (Photo: Photo: Jeffrey Au) defeated Korea's Eunjung Kim 7-5 to open the AMJ Masters Grand Slam of curling with a win. By Connor Simms, #19 world-ranked Christina Black, with Jill Brothers at third, Jenn Baxter, Marlee Powers, and Karlee Everist on the front end, aims to bounce back after a tough week in Cornwall. This is Black's third event, having competed at the Asham Icebreaker Challenge in Morris, Manitoba, and the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic in Cornwall. They finished as semi-finalists in Morris in their season opener. At the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic, they missed the playoffs with a 2-3 record. This week, they’re competing at the AMJ Masters in London, Ontario. As a team, this is their second Tier 1 Grand Slam of Curling event. Last season, they qualified for the Kioti National after winning the Tour Challenge Tier 2. In their first game, they faced Korea's Eunjung Kim (#9). Black won the opening draw to the button for the hammer. Black started strongly, opening the scoring in the first end with three points, drawing to the eight-foot. Kim responded on the second end with an open draw to the eight-foot for two. In the third end, Black over-curled on a double attempt, giving up a steal of one. Black then forced a single by angling in off a Kim stone on the button, taking a 4-3 lead. In the fifth end, Kim took their first lead with a deuce, making the lightweight hit a stick. In the end, that was all team Kim, Black made a game save against four, with a tap on a guard for their single point. In the seventh, Kim elected to give Black the steal of one, taking the hammer into the eighth end. Kim's strategy failed to execute in the end, giving up another steal of one, missing the slash attempt, and giving up the 7-5 victory. In their next game, they will face Korea's Eun Ji Gim at 4:30 pm Atlantic Time (AT) on Wednesday. On Thursday, they will face Korea's Seungyeon Has at 9:00 am AT. They wrap up the round robin on Friday, with the game still to be determined, with the results of their first three games. Catch all of the games live on the Rock Channel.
