McEwen Rolls to 2-0 Record
![]() Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen (photo: Curling Canada/ Micheal Burns) defeated Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell 8-6 to move to a 2-0 record at the 2025 Montana's Brier in Kelowna, British Columbia. By Connor Simms, #3 in the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) Mike McEwen with Colton Flasch at third, Kevin Marsh and Daniel Marsh on the front end remain a heavy favorites for playoffs at the Brier. McEwen is the only Canadian team in the top 4 that has not changed the lineup after last season's Brier. After a silver medal finish last season, they hope to bring valuable experiences to this season. They took on Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell in Draw 4 action, losing the opening draw to the button for the hammer. After what looked like a steal early for McEwen, Purcell made a nose double for his single in the first end. McEwen was forced to draw to the four-foot for their single point for an early 1-1 tie in the second end. The game opened up in the third after a flashed hit and stick against three McEwen counters, giving an early 4-1 lead. In the fourth end, Purcell missed the blank attempt on his last sticking it for his single point. Playing the nose run for two in the fifth, McEwen ended up wrecking on the guard giving up a steal of one to make it a 4-3 game into the second half. Coming out of the break, firing, McEwen cracked another three, drawing to the paint. Unable to find his deuce, Purcell was forced to hit and stick for their single point. After an amazing freeze from Purcell on his first, McEwen was forced to take his single with a tap. In the ninth end, Purcell made the in off double for two. McEwen ran Purcell out of stones in the tenth to take an 8-6 victory. The team curled a total of 91%. Individually, Mike was 88%, Colton was 88%, Kevin was 98%, and Daniel was 90%. In their opening game, McEwen defeated Prince Edward Island's Tyler Smith 6-4. They are back on the ice Sunday evening on TSN's feature game against Ontario's Sam Mooibroek at 8:30 pm Central Time (CT). On Monday they face Quebec's Felix Asselin at 3:30 pm CT. On Tuesday, they face Yukon's Thomas Scoffin at 10:30 a.m. CT and Northwest Territories Aaron Bartling at 8:30 p.m. CT. Wednesday is a provincial rival matchup with Rylan Kleiter at 3:30 p.m. CT. They wrap up the round robin on Thursday with Alberta's Brad Jacobs at 10:30 a.m. CT. The top three teams in each pool will move on to the playoffs. The one-seeds will face the two seeds for a spot in Saturday's 1-2 page playoff game. The game's losers will move on to play the three seeds for a place in Saturday's 3-4 page playoff game. The winner of the 1-2 page playoff game will advance to Sunday's finals, when the loser will face the winner of the 3-4 page playoff game in the semi-finals. In other Sunday morning action, Kleiter defeated Smith 7-4, Mooibroek defeated Bartling 12-2 and Asselin defeated Scoffin 7-5. Jacobs had the bye in pool B. In draw 5 action, the feature game on TSN will be between Canada's Brad Gushue and Northern Ontario's John Epping. Catch all the line scores on the Curling Zone Website. |
