Mooibroek triumphs in Brier debut
![]() Whitby's Sam Mooibroek (Photo: Curling Canada) shot 95% in his Brier debut to down Quebec in Draw 2. By: Cameron Sallaj Sam Mooibroek and his Ontario champion rink got off to a hot start in their first appearance at the Canadian Men's Curling Championship, taking down the veteran Jean-Michel Menard and team Quebec in the opening draw of Pool B. The Ontario team, comprised of Mooibroek, Ryan Wiebe, Scott Mitchell and Nathan Steele blanked the first end of the game before tacking a five on the board in the second. Quebec fourth Felix Asselin rubbed a guard on his last rock which gave Mooibroek the opportunity for a raise to score big. Quebec was then forced to a single in three. Continuing their strong play, Ontario scored three more in the fourth end and swiped a deuce in the fifth for a commanding 10-1 lead at the halfway point. Needing to play a minimum of eight ends, Asselin and Quebec got two back in the sixth and ended the game with one in the eighth, 11-4 the final score. It was a strong performance for the Ontario rink from Whitby, all of which are making their Brier debuts. Both Steele and Wiebe curled 84% while Mitchell shot 80%. It was Mooibroek at 95% that made all the difference in the game, however, outshooting Felix Asselin who was 78%. Team Ontario will play two games Sunday, looking to keep their momentum going. First in the morning (8:30 AM PT) against the Northwest Territories' Aaron Bartling and then at night (6:30 PM PT) against Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen. They will then play one game on both Monday and Tuesday against Yukon's Thomas Scoffin and Saskatchewan's Rylan Kleiter respectively. To close out the round robin, Mooibroek will face Alberta's Brad Jacobs on Wednesday before a double header on Thursday against Prince Edward Island's Tyler Smith and Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell to finish off the preliminary round. Elsewhere in Draw 2, Alberta's Brad Jacobs scored early and often in a 10-3 routing of Yukon's Scoffin. Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen beat PEI's Smith 6-4 while Nova Scotia's Owen Purcell downed Saskatchewan's Kleiter 7-2, also in his Brier debut. The next draw from the 2025 Montana's Brier begins at 6:30 PM Pacific Time with Pool A back in action. In the feature, Brad Gushue and Team Canada look to make it two in a row as they face the host British Columbia and Cameron de Jong. |
