Epping Victorious in Brier Return
![]() Northern Ontario's John Epping (photo: Curling Canada/Michael Burns) defeated New Brunswick's James Grattan 7-6 at the 2025 Montana's Brier in Kelowna, British Columbia. By Connor Simms, John Epping, with Jake Horgan at third, Tanner Horgan, and Ian McMillan on the front end, is the #5 seed in the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS). Epping makes his long-awaited return to the Brier, making it back for the first time since the 2021 season, when he was selected to represent Ontario in the Bubble in Calgary. Jake and Tanner return to the Brier for the second time in their careers. They finished in sixth place in 2023, representing Northern Ontario. Ian makes his debut in Kelowna. In their opening match, they faced New Brunswick's James Grattan on Friday evening. They won the opening draw to the button for the hammer. Epping scored 1 in the first end, then forced Grattan to a single in the second. Then added a steal in the third end, Epping responded in the fourth, scoring 3 to extend the lead to 4-2. After a blank end, Grattan scored 2 in the sixth end. After another blank end, Epping scored 2 in the eighth, then forced Grattan to a single in the ninth. Epping could not find a point in the tenth end, giving up a steal of one. This brought the game to an extra end, and ultimately, they scored their single in the extra end for the 7-6 victory. In their next game, they will face Alberta Kevin Koe at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on Saturday evening. They will face Newfoundland and Labrador's Brad Gushue on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, they face Manitoba's Matt Dunstone 11:30 am ET and British Columbia's Cameron De Jong 9:30 pm ET. They will face Manitoba's Reid Carruthers at 4:30 pm ET on Tuesday. They will have a bye on Wednesday morning. They will play their lone game in the evening at 9:30 pm ET against Newfoundland and Labrador's Ty Dilello. They will wrap up the round robin on Thursday at 4:30 pm ET against Nunavut's Shane Latimer. The top three teams in each pool will move on to the playoffs. The one-seeds will face the two seeds for a spot in Saturday's 1-2 page playoff game. The game's losers will move on to play the three seeds for a place in Saturday's 3-4 page playoff game. The winner of the 1-2 page playoff game will advance to Sunday's finals, when the loser will face the winner of the 3-4 page playoff game in the semi-finals.
