By: Meredith McCullum Lawes and teammates Selena Njegovan, Jocelyn Peterman and Kristin Gordon started the day with a 1-3 record following difficult last-shot losses in their previous 2 games. The Winnipeg based team was searching for solid performances Wednesday to regain their confidence and get themselves back on the right track. Their first game was at 9am against Newfoundland & Labrador's Brooke Gosland. Lawes got off to a hot start, scoring 2 then stealing 3 for an early 5-0 lead. Gosland got on the board with a single in the third end, but Lawes was able to steal 2 then 3 in the fourth and fifth to go up 10-1. Lawes kept her momentum going to a strong 13-3 win with handshakes after the eighth end. In the 7pm draw, Lawes took on Yukon's Bayly Scoffin. The game started off with a deuce for Lawes and then the teams traded in the second, third and fourth ends. Scoffin was able to steal 2 in the fifth end, to take a 4-3 lead half way through. Lawes turned the game around in the second half of the game with a deuce in the sixth end, followed by two steals of 3. The teams shook hands after 8 ends and Lawes secured another huge win, 11-4 the final. Now with a much improved 3-3 record, team Lawes is in the playoff hunt once again. With 2 draws left and 3 playoff spots up for grabs in pool B, 2 more wins will give Lawes a good shot at moving onto the Page Playoff Seeding round. Lawes plays Northwest Territories Kerry Galusha on Thursday at 2pm and Manitoba's Kerri Einarson Friday at 7pm. Both games will be important for both teams in terms of seeding. What the Lawes rink has on their side so far in the competition is their Last Stone Draw (LSD) record. If teams are tied at the end of pool play, the first consideration is head-to-head record. If there is a three or more way tie that cannot be decided, then LSD is the deciding factor of who moves on and who is eliminated. Lawes currently sits in first place in LSD rankings with a 129.9 cumulative distance so far in the competition. The next lowest in the pool is Nova Scotia's team Black, sitting at 259.1. |
