By Meredith McCullum Christina Black, backed by Jill Brothers, Jenn Baxter and Karlee Everist, is now tied for first in a very competitive pool B, with a 4-1 record. The back and forth thriller between Galusha and Black Tuesday night saw big scores for both teams throughout, ending in an 11-10 win for Black. Black kicked things off with a 3 points, before Galusha tied it up with a deuce followed by a steal in the third end. Black scored big again with 4 in the fourth end, but Galusha was once again able to recover with a score of 3 herself. Black scored 2 in the sixth and forced one in 7 to go up 9-7, looking in control of the game. A miss on Black's final stone in the eighth end, however, resulted in a steal of 3 for Galusha to put them on top for the first time all game. In the ninth end, Black had a draw through a port for 2 but came up heavy, settling for a single point that tied the game 10-10 going into the final end. Black needed a steal to pull off the win; Galusha had a run double on her last shot to win the game. She hit the top rock just a hair too thick, sending it through the rings and leaving Black sitting the 1 point they needed to secure an 11-10 win. With the win Black improves to 4-1, with only 3 games left to play in pool play. The top 3 teams in each pool will make it to playoffs. The Halifax based team will face Manitoba's Kerri Einarson (3-2), Quebec's Laurie St-Georges (4-2) and Manitoba's Kate Cameron (3-2) in their remaining games. Team Black is back at the Scotties this year after losing in last year's provincial title to Heather Smith. At the time, third Jill Brothers played with the Smith rink, before moving over to join team Black for the 2024-25 season. "It's been so valuable having her," said Black, on the addition of Brothers to the team this season. "Her talent, her passion and knowledge of the game has helped us go to the next level." Black made it to the page 3/4 page playoff game in 2023, losing to the eventual champions Kerri Einarson. Nova Scotia has high hopes of a strong run again this week at the 2025 Scotties in Thunder Bay, Ontario. "We want to get on the podium," said Black, speaking of her team's goals going into the event. " It's a long week and we just want to play our game and that's all you can control." |
