Saskatchewan's Martin Stays in Race
![]() Nancy Martin (photo: Andrew Klaver, Curling Canada) of Saskatoon Nutana faces Rachel Homan (Canada) in a key match Monday evening. For Martin, winning Saskatchewan was a surprise; the team was one of the last to qualify for provincials due to their split commitments to mixed doubles this season. Martin plays mixed doubles with Steve Laycock. However, once that dream of Canada's Olympic Trials was over, Martin and her teams of Chaelynn Stewart, Kadriana Lott and Deanna Doig re-focus with a strong performance in Kindersley that has continued with a 3-1 record open play at the nationals in Thunder Bay. Colleen Ackerman is on the bench as fifth player this week for Martin, with long-time teammate Sherry Anderson taking on the coaching responsibilities. Chaelynn, with partner Brayden Stewart, and Kadriana, with partner Colton Lott, both rank as the top mixed doubles teams in Canada. In Thunder Bay, Martin opened with a 10-6 win over Krista McCarville's home-town favourites on Friday, following up with an 8-6 win over Jane DiCarlo of Prince Edward Island on Saturday. Martin dropped a 7-6 decision to Corryn Brown of British Columbia on Sunday, though rebounded Monday morning with a 7-5 win over New Brunswick's Melissa Adams. Martin has a strong slate of teams remaining, with games against both Alberta teams and Nunavut to finish out the week. Martin enters Monday evening's game against Homan with a 26-22 record on the season, her first meeting in the skip role against Homan in four-player action. Homan comes in with a 48-4 record on the season, including three win to open the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. |
