Skrlik, with Margot Flemming, Ashton Skrlik and Geri-Lynn Ramsay held on for the win after Sturmay failed to execute her final shot in the tenth end to send their game into an extra end. Sturmay, with Danielle Schmiemann, Dezaray Hawes and Paige Papley opened scoring with a single point in the first end. Skrlik scored a single point in the second end, then stole another point in the fourth end to take an early lead. Sturmay scored two in the fifth end, then traded single in the seventh and eighth ends to hold a one-point lead. The ninth end was the turning point for Skrlik, scoring three to take a 6-4 lead into the final end. Holding a 3-1 record at the half-way point of the qualifying round puts Skrlik in a good position, in their second appearance at the Scotties after going 4-4 in 2023 in Kamloops. Flemming was a new addition to the lineup this season, replacing Brittany Tran, who left to play with Ashley Thevenot in Saskatchewan. The team played a heavy schedule during the fall tour season, with their match against Sturmay counting as their 75th game played on the season. Skrlik's 54-21 record on the season moved them up to 4th overall on the Canadian Team Ranking System and 12th on the World Curling Team Rankings. Skrlik opened with an 8-4 win over Melissa Adams of New Brunswick on Friday, following up with a 9-8 win over Corryn Brown of British Columbia. Ontario's Rachel Homan handed Skrlik their only loss on Sunday, a 9-7 decision. Skrlik next faces the winless Krista McCarville of Thunder Bay on Monday evening, following up with single games on Tuesday against Saskatchewan's Nancy Martin, Wednesday against Jane DiCarlo of Prince Edward Island and finishing the round-robin portion on Thursday against Julia Weagle of Nunavut. |
