By Connor Simms, Lisa Weagle and John Epping are one step closer to their dreams of wearing the Maple Leaf at the 2025 World Mixed Doubles with an opportunity to represent the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. Thursday evening, they took on Brittany Tran/Rylan Kleiter (Calgary/Saskatoon) in the 1A vs 2B page qualifier game. Tran/Kleiter started with the hammer because they were the one seed with a better round-robin record. Weagle/Epping opened the scoring, stealing one after a missed hit on a roll attempt. Tran/Kleiter responded, making a runback double into the pocket for three points. In the third end, Weagle/Epping took no time getting three points back, although missing the draw to the side of the button for four. Unable to find a deuce in the fourth, Tran/Kleiter was forced into a tough slice, settling for their single. Weagle/Epping found themselves a deuce coming wide around a four-foot stone to the side of the button in the fifth. Using their powerplay, Weagle/Epping remained on defence, forcing Tran/Kleiter to their single point. Weagle/Epping capitalized on their powerplay, making the nose hit for their deuce. Playing a shot that was arguably not even there, Weagle/Epping picked up a steal of two and the 10-5 victory, curling a solid 86% as a team. Weagle/Epping finished 5-2 in the 16-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Weagle/Epping defeated Taylor Reese-Hansen/Corey Chester (Kitimat/Victoria) 9-6, then won 9-4 against Riley Sandham/Brendan Craig (Guelph) and 10-8 against Jaelyn Cotter/Jim Cotter (Vernon). Weagle/Epping lost 6-3 against Jocelyn Peterman/Brett Gallant (Chestermere). Weagle/Epping responded with a 9-5 win over Melissa Adams/Alex Robichaud (Fredericton). Weagle/Epping lost 8-6 against Kadriana Lott/Colton Lott (Gimli). Weagle/Epping responded with a 9-5 win over Jennifer Armstrong/Tyrel Griffith (Rothesay/Kelowna) in their final qualifying round match. When about being one win away from being in a game for an Olympic berth, John Said "Its pretty exciting, I've never been in this position before. "It's nice to have this opportunity, especially with Lisa." With that win, Weagle/Epping will move on to the 1v2 page playoff versus Peterman/Gallant on Saturday at 7:00 pm Atlantic Time (AT). Tran/Kleiter will play Barrie's Jennifer Jones/Brent Laing for a spot in the 3v4 page playoff game. Watch all the action live on Curling Canada's YouTube Page.
