n major North American sports — and certainly in Canada, curling is among them — Epping stands alone as an openly gay, star male athlete. He is the only one. unquote.
Too bad that the writer didn't do some more fact checking. Let's start with Mark Tewksbury and a number of figure skaters long before John ( oh that's right I can hear you, Are they sports? ) Also there was a SK curler at the Brier who was gay. Let's get the facts straight sportsnet.

I'll grant you Tewskbury was a grievous omission but writers are never perfect and as you say there were other star athletes that in retrospect could have been named.

I'll give you Orser & Boitano but few fans, only select insiders knew those two were gay. Toller Cranston in the early days was far more flagrant but I don't recall articles or mentions during performances as Toller as a gay athlete.
Even John Eppings sexual declaration is rarely (if ever) mentioned during a TSN or S-Net curling broadcast. And it shouldn't be - because it doesn't make a difference to his performance as an elite athlete.

Nowadays, there are prolly a few star athletes in women's hockey that are gay - just haven't come out (their own choice). Megan Rapinoe is one of the biggest stars in soccer and she's openly declared herself to be gay.

Well put Decade, in fact there was much exclamation in the media when Tewksbury said he was gay...But great article and promotes curling always a good thing.

Tewksbury did not come out until after he retired from competitive swimming. There are several other athletes who have also done the same. This article is about someone currently playing the game.
