Canadian Mixed Doubles
How did they figure out the field for this? After reading the curling.ca and the Wikipedia site, the best I can come up with is
1) Every province and territory gets a team
2) The top CTRS teams get a team
Then, as best as I can deduce, the curling masterminds get together and go, oh crap how can we have a tournament without these people we're propping up, lets let them in for free.
What kind of random deal is 35 teams? This feels all sorts of odd.

35 teams seems so daunting.
Is Morris playing this game on his own (third end) or is CC's score page bugged? Highlights from other teams would be nice, too.

From CC website
Thirty-five teams will compete in five pools of seven. The 35 teams were selected by the following
criteria:
• 14 Member Associations (provinces and territories)
• 14 teams from the Canadian Mixed Doubles Rankings [CMDR] based on results from March 15, 2019
and March 15, 2020 (teams must have played at least two mixed doubles events during the season)
• Seven teams unable to compete this season due to COVID-19 but had committed to playing mixed
doubles together. (Rankings are based on each player’s best three CTRS points events from the
2019/2020 season combined with their partners. All players must be part of Curling Canada’s
National Team program)

I'm pretty sure CZ usually gets score updates input by volunteers on the site of the events, not someone sitting at CZ central. As noted the NT senior men's scores from earlier today

That part there seems carefully worded to make sure they got certain people in there. The person’s three best events with their team or their doubles team? I assume Brier/Scotties weigh super heavy in that? Would that essentially guarantee doubles spots to the playoff teams from the Brier/Scotties?

Of course, how else would Bobby Sauder have got there?

Lawes's only entry in CMDR is with her nephew. That ranking (#17) is good enough to get in.
If Lawes were to partner up with someone else to try to get in via CTRS, it would have to be someone with very good CTRS. Neither Mike McEwen (317.716) nor Jim Cotter (101.956) had a spectacular 2019-2020 season, so I'm not sure if that partnership would've been good enough (I haven't done the math, so feel free to prove me wrong). Her best bet, if she wants to get in via CTRS with a new partner instead of via CMDR with her nephew, would probably be someone like Brad Jacobs (483.766).

This is not the Olympic trials. This is just the national championship.
You can look up all the ways she can get in to the trials by the revised qualification process:

Could be sisters
I am here watching at home over lunch catching a couple of ends of the NL vs MB game.
Dezaray and Veanna Cox who played a lawyer in the movie Erin Brockovich could be sisters.

I like the mixed, short ends, game moves fast, big ends galore but the lack of variety in the play is a drawback.

Agree with hogged again. maybe more variety in the placement of the placed rocks would allow more thinking.

if I’m going to have less variety, I’m really enjoying having a giant mess to deal with every end.

Gushue question
Gushue played provincial mixed doubles with his daughter but did not win. How does he get to play at Nationals??

Morris / Lawes
Has there been any reporting why they aren’t playing together? Seems like there’s a story there when the reigning Olympic gold medalists are both at the event but with different partners. Falling out? John think that Homan (his original partner) is better?
And for anyone who offers the reason of “they wouldn’t have enough points to qualify as a team”.. Curling Canada would have done whatever needed to get them in if they wanted to be in.

Seven teams who were unable to compete during the 2020–21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada also qualified for the event. Each player was ranked based on their top three CTRS events during the 2019–20 season. Both players must also be part of Curling Canada's National Team program.[5]

Kerri Einarson Brad Gushue Manitoba / Newfoundland and Labrador

One rule the regular game should adopt is the blank and lose hammer. Instead of the early bailout/go for the blank that we often see the teams would have to stay aggressive and go for the 2. More big ends, more steals, more action.

She's playing with a virtually unknown Ontario nephew.
Couldn't round up a Top10 male player to set about defending her Olympic gold.
Wonder why Morris wouldn't (didn't) want to play with her???
. . ! ! !
The announcer indicated since Morris/Homan have already qualified for the Trials he is using this event for " practice" .

I suspect Gushue is a broken man after getting squashed in the last few draws of the Brier; so he's gonna drag Kerri down with him.
Don’t worry about Kerri, she’s using this as practice for the worlds

As for Kaitlyn playing with a glorified club curler? Must be a family obligation...

Lawes had played with her nephew since 2014, if not earlier.

That's 7 years ago, if you do the math. This is not some partnership that was slapped together at the last minute.

Why can't TSN simply stream the night games without anouncers. Personally, it would be an upgrade for me. The mistakes and "over Talk" is infuriating!
