Team Sturmay earns' berth into final at 2025 Home Hardware Pre-Trials
![]() WOLFVILLE, N.S. — There are fewer more pressure-packed situations than a win-and-you’re-in scenario with the trials on the line, but Team Selena Sturmay (5-1; Edmonton) handled its opportunity at the 2025 Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials with a 10-2 win over Team Kayla MacMillan (4-2; Victoria) on Thursday afternoon. It’s a pivotal win that cements Team Sturmay’s berth into a best two-of-three final at the Andrew H. McCain Arena in Wolfville, N.S., with its opposition still to be determined, beginning Saturday at 9 a.m. (all times AT). The winner of said final will earn a spot at the upcoming 2025 Montana’s Canadian Curling Trials, presented by Connect Hearing, at Scotiabank Arena in Halifax Nov. 22 – 30, 2025. “It felt really good to go out there and play to our capabilities,” said skip Selena Sturmay. “We haven’t seen that for a while, but things are all feeling really good. Things are clicking. All the work we’ve put in is finally paying off.” The Saville Community Sports Centre cohort, rounded out by vice-skip Danielle Schmiemann, second Dezaray Hawes, lead Paige Papley and coach Ted Appleman, were surgical in its approach and ruthless in its execution in the landslide victory. “We knew that that game was a trip to the final,” said Sturmay. “It made us a little more hungry for it.” Team Sturmay leapt to an early four-point lead in the contest, making good on its deuce opportunity with hammer in the first, then stealing two in the second. It was a pace-setting set of ends that never saw Team MacMillan mount any tangible offensive countermeasures, leading to the eventual 10-2 final score. “Just keep your foot on the pedal,” said Sturmay. “We wanted to play that game quite aggressive and get some points up early, then just kind of coast out the rest, which is exactly what we ended up doing.” On the men’s side Thursday afternoon, Team Braden Calvert (5-2; Winnipeg) secured a berth into the 2025 Home Hardware Pre-Trials men’s final with an 8-6 win over Team Scott Howard (4-3; Navan, Ont.). Team Jaden King (4-3; London, Ont.) bested Team Jean-Michel Ménard (4-3; Montréal) 10-8 and Team Owen Purcell (3-4; Halifax) found the win column over Team Mark Kean (0-7; Woodstock, Ont.). In women’s play, Team Danielle Inglis (3-3; Ottawa) bounced Team Beth Peterson (2-4; Winnipeg) 8-6. In additional action Thursday morning, Team Braden Calvert earned a 6-4 win over Team Mooibroek (3-3; Whitby). Team Jordon McDonald (4-2; Winnipeg) bettered Team Scott Howard 8-2 while Team Ashley Thevenot (3-3; Martensville, Sask.) topped Team Myla Plett (3-3; Edmonton/Sherwood Park, Alta.) and Team Krista Scharf (3-3; Thunder Bay, Ont.) battered Team Nancy Martin (1-5; Martensville, Sask.) 8-3. The men’s semifinal will take place Friday at 9 a.m., while the women’s semifinal is set for 2 p.m., the same day. The men’s final begins shortly thereafter at 7 p.m. The 2025 Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials continues Thursday 7 p.m. Live scoring, standings and statistics for the 2025 Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials are available by CLICKING HERE.
