![]() Manitoba's Matt Dunstone (Photo: Curling Canada) defeated Minnesota's Chase Sinnett 7-0 to grab their spot in the A-qualifier Friday evening at the Henderson Metal Fall Classic presented by Kioti Tractors of Ontario in Sault Ste. Marie. By Connor Simms, #2 World-Ranked Matt Dunstone, with Colton Lott at third, E.J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden on the front end, are proving why they are the one seed in this event. The hometown favourites as Sault Ste. Marie's natives, Ryan and EJ, kicked off the event on Thursday afternoon. They took on Nathan Young (St. John's, NL) in their opening game. Dunstone scored 3 in the first end, then added a steal of 3 in the second end. After a blank end, Young scored 3 in the fourth end to trail 6-3. Dunstone responded in the fifth end, scoring 5 for the 11-3 victory. In their next game, they took on Chase Sinnett (Chaska, MN) in draw 3. Dunstone won the opening game, drawing to the button for the hammer. Dunstone scored 2 in the first end, then added a steal in the second end, added another steal of 2 in the third end, and stole 2 more in the fourth end for the 7-0 win. In other draw 3 action, John Epping (Sudbury, NO) defeated Evan Van Amsterdam(Edmonton, AB) 7-0, Joel Retornaz (Trentino, ITA) defeated Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) 8-1, Daniel Casper (Chaska, MN) defeated Michael Fournier (Toronto, ON) 6-2, Nathan Young (St. John's NL) defeated Dustin Kalthoff (Saskatoon, SK) 7-4, and Shinya ABe (Sapporo, JPN) defeated Sandy MacEwan (Sudbury, NO) 7-3. This week's event features an 18-team, triple-knockout format. Two teams will qualify from the A-side, and three from the B/C-side. The playoffs will then consist of a regular 8-team, single-elimination round. That win moves Dunstone into the A-qualifier game for a spot in the playoffs. They will face Team Casper with Rich Ruohenon filling in for Daniel. In the other A-qualifier, Retornaz will face Epping. This will happen on Friday at 7:30 pm Eastern Time (ET).
