New Einarson lineup has first playoff finish
![]() Team Kerri Einarson (photo: Curling Canada) at Pointsbet in October. By Meredith McCullum, After a strange year with injury and controversy, Einarson's lineup looks a bit different to start the 2025-26 season. Briane Harris has moved on to join Kate Cameron's squad and Karlee Burgess stepped in as lead. Val Sweeting remains as vice-skip and Shannon Birchard is back in the lineup at second after missing almost all of last season recovering from a knee injury. Reid Carruthers remains with the team as coach and Krysten Karwacki continues as alternate. This past week Einarson skipped her team to a quarterfinal finish at the Grand Slam of Curling (GSOC) Tour Challenge, losing 9-3 to the eventual winner Rachel Homan. Einarson's Gimli, Man. squad earned a berth in the 2025 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, which are being held Nov. 22-30 in Halifax, N.S. by finishing as the top-ranked team on the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) for the 2023-24 period. Einarson sits 2nd in the current CTRS rankings and entered the 2025-26 season ranked #5 in the world. None of team Einarson have any Olympic experience, although all four are familiar with the feeling of the Maple Leaf on their back. Birchard, Sweeting and Einarson went on a historic run together, winning 4 Scottie's Tournament of Heart Titles in a row from 2020-2023. Though they were never able to win the elusive gold medal, they brought home bronze for Canada in 2022 and 2023 and gained huge experience on an international stage. Birchard did win gold at the 2018 World Championships when she represented Canada with Jennifer Jones rink, after she had filled in for Kaitlyn Lawes at the Scotties while she competed in mixed doubles at the Olympics. Burgess has yet to win her first Scotties, but she has her own experience at world events. Burgess is a 3-time World Junior gold medalist in 2016, 18 and 20, with a silver from 2019 and bronze from 2017 to finish off the collection. In 2016, Burgess played second on Mary Fay's team at the Youth Olympic Games, bringing home gold for Canada. Despite inexperience on the Olympic stage and a new lineup, Einarson's squad will be strong contenders for playoffs in Halifax. All four players are no stranger to high pressure moments and will give it their all as they try to qualify for the 2026 Games in Cortina, Italy. Einarson's has one final event before heading to Atlantic Canada - the GSOC Tahoe in Nevada, U.S.A. Nov. 4-9. The draw schedule has not yet been released. Scores, standings and full team lineups will be available at curlingzone.ca once they are released later this month. All games will be available on GSOC's streaming platform The Rock Channel. |
