By Meredith McCullum, #1 World-Ranked Rachel Homan - backed by Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes - has had a strong start to the season with back to back championships at the first Grand Slam of Curling (GSOC) event, the AMJ Masters, and the Pointsbet Invitational. Homan looks to continue her hot start at the second GSOC event October 14-19. She plays Switzerland's Xenia Schwaller, Italy's Stefania Constantini, Sweden's Isabella Wrana and Japan's Sayaka Yoshimura in Round Robin action before playoffs begin Saturday morning. Homan is one of eight women's teams who has qualified for the 2025 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia from November 22-30. Homan's squad earned their Trials berth by winning the 2024 Scottie's Tournament of Hearts. They have since won multiple GSOC Titles, another Scottie's Title (2025) and 2 World Championships (2024, 2025). One of those World Championship wins was in Sydney, N.S., only a few hours away from Halifax. That was the last time Homan's rink played in a major event in Nova Scotia and they will no doubt bring the same energy as they fight for a spot on Canada's Olympic team in Cortina, Italy in February. Homan and Miskew have Olympic experience from the 2018 games in PyeongChang where they finished 6th alongside Joanne Courtney and Lisa Weagle, just short of playoffs. Homan represented Canada at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, finishing 5th and short of playoffs once again. Fleury and Wilkes do not have any Olympic experience. Fleury skipped a team to the finals at the 2021 Olympic Trials, losing in an extra end to Jennifer Jones squad who went on to finish 5th at the Beijing Games. This season, the Homan rink has brought on 2-time Scottie's Champ Heather Nedohin as their coach. With Nedohin's experience and expertise to guide them, Homan's squad looks to keep the good times rolling into November and earn another opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf on their back. Team Homan has kept Rachelle Brown on as their alternate for the 2025-26 season. Homan will play in the CO-OP Tour Challenge this week and then the Kioti GSOC Tahoe November 4-9 before their focus officially shifts to Olympic Trials prep.
