Kleiter Positioned for Last Olympic Trials points berth
![]() Saskatoon's Rylan Kleiter won 4-2 over Regina's Josh Bryden on Thursday. Brad Gushue of St. John's and Brad Jacobs of Edmonton hold spots into the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials, coming up in November in Halifax. Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone takes this year's spot that Jacobs won again, with it going to the top team off the Canadian Team Rankings System (CTRS). The next three berths are off the two-year CTRS list, published on Curling Canada's website. Saskatoon's Mike McEwen and Calgary's Kevin Koe both have clinched their places in Halifax. John Epping holds the third two-year berth, holding a razor-thin 1.435-point lead over Kleiter. For Kleiter, this is the preferred route to grabbing their spot with the 'big boys', notable names from the last 20 years on tour. Reaching the quarterfinals would earn Kleiter's team enough points to clinch the sixth berth in the Trials. Should Epping get passed, they have the seventh berth in hand, running away with the last spot through this year's CTRS rankings. That same single-season CTRS berth currently belongs to Kleiter, though if they're unable to improve their ranking, Winnipeg's Jordon McDonald can pass them for the one-year berth by winning this weekend's Speedy Creek Shootout. McDonald has one remaining event left, playing at the Best of the West in Saskatoon in April, though the strength of field is unlikely to help them. This is the last competition for the teams in contention for the Trials berth. The final seven teams earning berths through CTRS points will be decided. The next eight teams will compete in the Olympic Pre-Trials for the eighth and final spot in Halifax. Kleiter began the weekend with an important first win over Bryden, scoring two in the fourth end and riding out the 4-2 win. In their next game, Kleiter plays Wouter Gosgens (Zoetermeer, NED) on Friday at 1:30 pm Mountain Time, following up against Takumi Maeda (Kitami, JPN) at 9 pm. Kleiter finishes with two games on Saturday, facing JaeBeom Lee (Uiseong, Korea) at 1:30pm and China's Xiao Ming Xu at 9 pm. The top 8 teams across all pools advance to Sunday's single knockout championship round. |
