King with Dylan Niepage at third, Owen Henry and Daniel Del Conte on the front end continue their development on Tour as one of the upcoming names to know from Ontario. King was the surprise runner-up to Scott Howard a year ago in the Ontario Tankard, then started the season in August, reaching the final of the U25 NextGen Classic in Edmonton. The team rose to 44th on the World Curling Team rankings with seven playoff berths in 11 appearances on Tour. King made another run through the C-side at the Ontario Curling Championships, falling in the playoff qualifier game. On their minds this week in next season's Olympic Pre-Trials event, with King sitting 10th in a race for eight spots, though a strong result in Swift Current will leapfrog the London-based foursome into the chase for the Olympics. A semifinal or better finish for King would earn them enough points to move past the current eighth-seeded Dustin Kalthoff. He is playing this weekend but without his regular team after third Josh Heidt and his wife welcomed the arrival of their first child. King started off right against Yanagisawa, the recent Japanese champions who are headed to Moose Jaw for the BKT Tires World Curling Championship next weekend. King stole the first end, trading deuce with Yanagisawa in the second and third ends. King and Yanagisawa then traded singles in the fourth and fifth ends, reaching the fateful sixth end. King put pressure on the Japanese side, forcing a mistake to steal three points to take a 7-3 lead. King added one more point in the seventh end on a hail mary attempt to seal the 8-3 victory. . In their next game, King plays Niklas Edin (Karlstad, SWE) on Friday at 10 am Mountain Time, following up against Jacob Libbus (Edmonton, AB) at 5:30 pm. King returns Saturday with two more games, taking on James Ballance (Okotoks/Edmonton, AB) on Saturday at 10 am and Ethan Sampson (Chaska, MN) at 5:30 pm. The top 8 teams across all pools advance to Sunday's single knockout championship round. |
