By: Cameron Sallaj In a shocking upset at the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex in Summerside, Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant (Calgary, AB), Canada's Olympic Trials champions, drop a 6-5 extra end decision to Northern Ontario's Kira Brunton and Jacob Horgan (Sudbury, ON). It was a perfect start for Brunton/Horgan, who competed in this year's Scotties and Brier with teams Danielle Inglis and John Epping respectively. After earning the hammer, the team scored two in the first end. After trading singles in two and three, the Northern Ontario rink stole one in the fourth to add to their total, going ahead 4-1. The teams then traded singles in five and six with Brunton/Horgan maintaining a three-point edge. Needing to rally late in the game, Peterman/Gallant tacked two more points on the board in seven and stole one in the eighth to force an extra end. There, Brunton/Horgan took one to secure the 6-5 win, handing Peterman/Gallant just their second loss of the 2024-25 season. With the win, the Sudbury rink, curling out of the Northern Credit Union Curling Club moves to 2-0. In their opening game, the team won 15-0 over Sadie Pinksen and David Aglukark of Nunavut. The loss sends Peterman/Gallant to 1-1 after an opening 10-3 win over Tyler Parmiter and Ronnie Burgess (Fredericton, NB). Both Kira Brunton and Jacob Horgan have had success in their four person games as well as the mixed doubles discipline. At the 2025 Scotties, Brunton made the playoffs as part of Ontario's Team Inglis while Horgan finished 6-2 as third for Northern Ontario's Team Epping. The Epping rink will also be in Toronto for the season ending AMJ Players' Championship Slam. Next for Brunton/Horgan will be Christie Gamble and Matt Lang, the Saskatchewan champions, at 3 pm ET Monday afternoon. Also still to play are the Quebec and Alberta provincial champions as well as points qualifiers Parmiter/Burgess and Gionest/Desjardins. With twelve teams advancing to the knockout round, a 4-3 record at minimum will be needed for a chance at qualification. |
