Homan 2-1 in Korea

Canada's Team Rachel Homan (Photo: Curling Canada) is back in the win column in Uijeongbu after an early setback on day 1.

A dominant start to the 2025 LGT World Women's Curling Championship was followed by a shocking loss as Canada split their opening day in South Korea.

In Draw 1, Rachel Homan, Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes soared to a 13-2 win over championship newcomers Lithuania.

After taking two in the first and forcing their opponents to one in the second, the Ottawa rink picked up five in the third end to break the game wide open. They later added four more in the sixth end to bring the game to an early concession.

The Canadians were then right back on the ice in Draw 2 taking on Scotland's Sophie Jackson. A tight scoreline through the first half saw the teams tied up before Homan picked up two in nine to take the lead coming home.

This wouldn't be enough of a cushion, however, with a last rock mistake allowing Scottish fourth Rebecca Morrison to capitalize with three to hand Team Homan just their fifth loss of the season, 8-7 the final score.

Back on the ice Sunday in Draw 4, the "Homan Empire" got off to a terrible start against Sweden's Anna Hasselborg, giving up a steal of two in the first end.

Determined to claw their way back, Team Canada quickly returned to their top form, tying the game in the third end and later taking the lead by three after a pair of miscues by the Swedish skip in the fifth.

With Canada stealing back-to-back points in six and seven, Sweden contemplated conceding before deciding to play the eighth end. This proved to be the right call as despite being five points back, Team Hasselborg scored three points before adding a steal in the ninth to bring the game within one point.

Needing to stop the bleeding, Rachel Homan ensured a Canadian victory with a perfect draw on her final stone, fending off the Swedes 9-7 to climb to 2-1 in the standings.

After two days of competition in Uijeongbu, Team Canada currently sits tied for fourth in the standings with China and Denmark all at 2-1. South Korea and Switzerland lead the pool at 3-0 while Sweden sits one game back at 3-1.

Current Standings (After Draw 5):

Korea (Gim Eun-ji): 3-0
Switzerland (Silvana Tirinzoni): 3-0
Sweden (Anna Hasselborg): 3-1
Canada (Rachel Homan): 2-1
China (Wang Rui): 2-1
Denmark (Madeleine Dupont): 2-1
Italy (Stefania Constantini): 1-2
Japan (Sayaka Yoshimura): 1-2
Norway (Marianne Roervik): 1-2
Scotland (Sophie Jackson): 1-2
United States (Tabitha Peterson): 1-2
Lithuania (Virginija Paulauskaite): 0-3
Turkiye (Dilsat Yildiz): 0-3

The next draw from the 2025 LGT World Women's Curling Championship begins Sunday night at 8 pm ET, though Canada is idle. Team Homan's next game will be at 1 am ET Monday morning as the team battles Denmark's Madeleine Dupont, a team that shares the same 2-1 record.
