Gunnlaugson finished 4-2 in the 24 team DEKALB Superspiel qualifying round, held December 3 - 6, 2021 at the Morris Curling Club in Morris, Canada. In their opening game, Gunnlaugson defeated Andrin Schnider (Schaffhausen, SUI) 7-4, then went on to lose 8-1 against Kody Hartung (Saskatoon, SK). Gunnlaugson responded with a 9-7 win over Sean Grassie (Winnipeg, MB). Gunnlaugson won 5-0 against Ryan Wiebe (Winnipeg, MB) to advance to a B-Qualifier game where they lost 6-4 against Sturmay to drop into a C-Qualifier game where they responded with a 6-0 win over Jacques Gauthier (Winnipeg, MB) to advance to the playoff round. in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the DEKALB Superspiel Championship title, Gunnlaugson earned 41.791 world rankings points along with the $11,400CDN first prize cheque, moving up 1 spots the World Ranking Standings into 12th place overall with 250.795 total points. Gunnlaugson ranks 9th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 132.351 points earned so far this season.
