Howard vs Brazil
So is this a slam dunk for Howard or will it take more than 3 games,?

Slam dunk. Way too much firepower for Brazil.

LMFAO. I can well imagine the conversation at the CCA about this.
After being lambasted about the single, stupidest format ever employed in a national event that effectively eliminated two superior teams, the CCA doesn't apologize to Glenn Howard or Charlie Thomas. Yet, instead it offers-as a weak apology-the spot to play ****ing Brazil for the NA spot at the world's.
Or, in short; 'Hey Glenn, sorry about the butt ****, but would you mind doing Brad Gushue's job for us? So we can play in Vegas?
Damn, CCA, at least take guys out to dinner and a movie first.

Given that Brazil has never taken a game from the USA in it's multiple attempts, I would expect a 3-0 shellacking.
But, well, that's why you play the games.

Oh please, Glenn didn't get eliminated because of the format. He got eliminated because he lost to Bottcher twice in the championship round.

Howard?
Does anyone know how they were picked? What criteria was used in the selection. Gushue and Koe are busy that week but how did they go as low as the 10th ranked team, including 2 in Ontario if it's about travel costs?
The CC article just says "They were asked"

Team had to be picked prior to the Trials, and Howard was the highest ranking remaining team.

Both Simmons (5th - Laycock) and Gunner (Coach - Bottcher) were at the trials.

Oh of course, silly me. It's always the athlete's fault for a stupid format, not the idiot's who put it in place.
You're a moron.

Really? Considering there were at least several weeks after the trials before the Challenge, why exactly was it necessary?
And if that's truly the case, then why not a rider in the Brier agreement which states that the defending champ has the obligation-as part of the responsibility of being Team Canada-to play in s Challenge Round if necessary?
And don't tell me the CCA was caught off guard on this. They knew well in advance what the rules are, where the World's were being held and that the possibility of a challenge was real.
No offence intended to Howard, but let's stop hiding behind a false pretence. This is a kiss and make up to them for the Pre-trials, nothing less.

Because the CCA (rightly) feels it is a better use of Team Canada to play in the actual Continental Cup than in what should be a walkover playin that the 30th best Canadian team would win 99 times out of 100.

Continental cup
Is it just me or is the continental cup seemingly no more than an exhibition in order to give the players a guaranteed paid week off, It's a money grab for the curling federations, no more, no less. None of the players take it too seriously until the final skins game. Just watch the players that are sitting on the bench with their rum and cokes disguised in coffee cups.
Now as far as the challenge goes, it may not be taken too seriously by curling Canada because there's only one challenger and they aren't that good yet. Will their tone change once there's 5 or 6 challengers with a chance Canada does not qualify for worlds. No worlds means no world ranking points which means no Olympic qualifying which in curling would be the end of the world for Canada. Do you think then they might send the number one team in Canada? I know it's stretch, very unlikely, but it is possible.

you're 100% right about the continental cup and definitely not alone in that thought. frustrating for me that a worthless exhibition gets full coverage over events that matter.

Oh boy... I missed your rants.
First, the requirement to name the team prior to the Trials was something that Curling Canada didn't have a choice over, it was something that WCF required. So they picked the top ranked team that they knew was available.
Who would have you suggested by the way? If you have a better idea on who to selected to represent Canada, please, enlighten us.
As for your complaints about the format... it may not have been ideal. But again, all the teams had to go through it, and Team Howard had it's shot. They didn't pull it off.
I put your complaints in the same category as when you're bitching about how the ice cost you a spiel. Look, it sucks, but both teams play on it. Everyone knows what they're getting into, and everyone has to figure out how to manage the conditions.

Howard scores 7 in the first end and steals 3 in the second. Gonna be 3 really fast games.

Nobody doubted this.
Hopefully what this leads to is the next generation of Brazilian heritage curlers taking up the sport and challenging the USA or Canada or even Mexico at some point.
