So Curling Canada kicks Martin and Griffith to the curb again.

Good to see CCA encouraging new people. I wonder if Homan and Morris didn't want to go?

I don't see any criteria that could put Martin/Griffith over Peterman/Gallant. The only argument for them at the Olympics was they were the top ranked team on the CTRS that was eligible. That's not the case here as P/G are eligible for Worlds. Also the 2nd most recent champions, world silver medallists. Their resume is far beyond M/G.

I predict another silver for Canada, or maybe even bronze.
Eventually Canada will complete the set and finally win a gold medal at world mixed doubles, but I don't think we're at that point yet.
If Canada gets gold now, I feel like nothing will change and nothing will improve.

First off, why are there no MD playdowns to determine who reps Canada?
Second, while I like Gallant and Peterman, they are class acts and will represent Canada well, they both were just at Olympics, couldn't Curl Canada go outside their little box for once and select someone else?

The national event was cancelled due to COVID back in December and CC decided not to try and re-schedule it. A mistake in hindsight? Probably.

Perhaps sometime in the not too distant future Curl Canada will actually take mixed doubles seriously. It's been around for years, 2 Olympics now and they still don't have a handle on it.
The terrible scheduling of the olympic qualifier and the fact that they didn't even bother to reschedule the nationals is incompetence. They are doing a huge disservice to the curlers who just want to compete. They also seem to discount teams who almost specialize in MD (Lott/Sahadiak, Tuck/Tuck, Martin/Griffiths) in favour of established tour curlers.

It's not just Curling Canada. Even TV commentators don't take mixed doubles seriously. Bruce Rainnie and Mike Harris repeatedly misstated the rules until Joanne Courtney showed up and set them straight.
It's not just Canadians with this problem, though. WCF and US commentators have also repeatedly misstated the rules.
I like how Warren Hansen puts it: it's 3 rock rule. Don't use the number 4 or 5. Use the number 3.

If Canada can hold events to select its women's and men's team for the worlds why can't it hold one for mixed doubles?
The Scottish mixed doubles championships are taking place this week. Given the depth - there are 24 pairs playing - its quite possible the winner may be selected to go to the worlds as opposed to Scottish curling simply ignoring the result..
So no guarantee it will be Dodds and Mouat selected to head off to Geneva at the end of April - especially if say Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie or even Grant Hardie and Vicky Wright were to win the event.

Very good question. The answer is Curl Canada could not plan a one float parade.

It would be odd if Mouat/Dodds were sent to Worlds if they lose this event after a 4th place at Olympics. Yes they won last year but if they lose now it seems likely the winner should go.
As for Curling Canada...they maybe a choice. I think a bad one. Nothing more to say.

Under normal circumstances, Japan would currently be in the middle of its national championships, which would also determine its representative for worlds. Alas, the tournament was cancelled due to COVID. The JCA was due to make some announcement about what they plan to do about the Worlds spot by now, but I've yet to see any mention of this on their website.

Likely a moot point. Mouat and Dodds look unstoppable in the round robin.

Surprisingly Grant Hardie and Vicky Wright didn't even make the quarter finals.
Grant didn't play the final round robin game this morning and Vicky's fiance Greg Drummond stepped in to partner her - they lost though and came third in their group. Anyone know why Grant didn't play?
Greg Drummond was also Dodds and Mouat's coach at the Olympics.
I would expect a Muirhead/Lammie vs Mouat/Dodds final in a battle of the skips and seconds. I expect if either of them win they will be off to the worlds. Hailey Duff and Hammy McMillan are unbeaten too - perhaps the leads can pull it off!

I don't know the reason but Greg Drummond has been playing in place of Grant Hardie for the whole event. Based on pictures I think he also wasn't present last Friday at the mens and womens Scottish Championships when the Olympic teams did a bit of meet and greet thing.

Alina Pätz/Sven Michel just won SUI. They might be hungry to medal after returning empty-handed from the Olympics.

They of course won the World in 2011 (a very different era, but a world championship nonetheless). Sven Michel also won a second world with Michèle Jäggi in 2018.

Fingers crossed that he is okay, whatever is going on with him.

Oh boy, our Scottish championship final is:
OGM skip Eve Muirhead & OSM second Bobby Lammie
vs
OGM second Jen Dodds & OSM skip Bruce Mouat
I don’t want to hear any more crap about how mens/womens curlers should leave mixed doubles to the specialists because it’s been disproved today.

What is this so-called crap argument, by the way? Can you restate it clearly for discussion?
I don't think anyone is seriously saying that 4-person curlers are inferior to the specialists, or that they should not be allowed to even play mixed doubles. I think there's room to suggest that in Canada, at least, the specialists are considered second class citizens, and that there isn't much in terms of high quality MD spiels.

Canada doesn't allow anyone who's playing in the traditional format to go to the olympics for MD.

Absolute smasher from Muirhead to score 4 in the opening end. This might be Mouat's silver curse year...

Absolutely this^.
Covid complications aside, (and this was an impossible position having to pick a rep)we have a competition explicitly set aside to determine who represents us at the Olympics. We've agreed that the winner of the Olympic qualifier is our best in either Mens/Womens teams or MD.
To arbitrarily disallow these players from competing is all sorts of wrong.
Hopefully this ruling is changed for the next winter Olympics.

Muirhead & Lammie 7-2 up after 4.
Not sure if Mouat/Dodds will be allowed to defend their world title anyway or if we go to Muirhead/Lammie.
Actually what about a Muirhead/Mouat dream team?
