Can't help but notice the vast contrast between the Jacobs/Edin game earlier today and the Jones/H'Borg matchup.
Actually it's Alarming.

Yes it is! Jen herself not making the same shot twice in a row, Kaitlyn struggling...

well.. the thing is there's no depth at all in swedish curling . none. edin is gonna contuinue to have that bye to worlds and euros for at least the next 5 years or longer if he wants it. i can see him retiring if he wins olympic gold in 2022. actuall i cn see all of them retiring. what else would there be for them. motivation might start to waver
you cant blme him for that problem..or maybe you can. when he recruited eriksson and wrana he effectively destroyed the depth sweden was building.he eliminated the top 2 threats to him. those 2 were going to be very good on their own(eriksson was already doing impressive things with his own team). sweden could have been really interesting to watch if those 3 had stayed separate and were battling it out. instead we have 1 super team miles ahead of everyone else with no challengers in sight.

It seems to me that contrary how our teams operate with jobs and family sacrifices, to the Swedes this IS their job. Why retire if they continue to win and enjoy the lifestyle.

Sweden is THE WORST offender of "paying one team" to play for their country at all costs to the future of curling. Yes, we've "heard" that they've pooled the earnings, sponsorships, and government funding for the team to enable them to claim "working" conditions for medical, retirement funds etc. Right now Sweden has ONE men's team in the top 80 in the world and 2 ladies teams in the top 160 in the world! Even MEXICO has a ladies team in the top 160. The Asian teams that also pay and sponsor their teams have at least 4-5-6 teams. Even look at the Swiss ladies the last 7 years or so have had 4 different world champion teams. Need a new rule that a country must have X amount of teams in the top 100 to compete at the worlds and Olympics. Pick a number, but should be at least 3.
Again, In my opinion.

You have to factor in the relative sizes of the countries by population, though.
(rounding to nearest million here)
China has 1.4 billion people to draw on. Mexico has 127 million. Japan 126 million. South Korea 52 million.
Sweden has 10 million. Switzerland 9 million.

Too bad about Muirhead and I'm not just referring to her disastrous last shot in the 6th or her two misses, a freeze attempt and a takeout in the 8th end of the QF's.
Clearly, she has never fully recovered from her surgery in May, 2018 as evidenced by the extraordinary long rehabilitation period following that surgery and her Y-T-D performance. Last time I checked she was ranked 25th on the World Curling Tour with earnings in the $12 to$13K range.
While I'm not sure why, it still irks me not knowing why a 17 year old Scratch golfer turned down numerous lucrative USA golf scholarship offers and a chance to make the LPGA in exchange for a career in curling. Even with mediocre success, my guesstimate is that her winnings alone would probably exceed $5M today.
But as Einstein once said: "Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."

There is a huge difference between a scratch Sottish 17 year old and someone making 5 million on tour. US university teams are full of scratch golfers.f

well, clearly she went with what she enjoyed more. if she thought only about the earning potential she'd clearly have gone with golf

I think your comment about how she assessed this situation is pretty much bang on.
One of the problems in this world is that sometimes doors will open and others close and you don't always have a lot of time to figure out which one to take.

She won the Cargill, finished 2nd in the Shorty Jenkins (where they defeated both Tirinzoni and Homan), made the finals of the Colonial Square Classic, won the Masters Grand Slam* (defeating Hasselborg along the way), lost the final of the Canada Cup to Homan and made the semifinals of the Boost National, moving from 14th to number 1 on the World Curling Tour and yet, we now have curling strategists all of a sudden coming out of the woodwork uttering words of wisdom like " she gonna have to muzzle that front end, teach them some discipline, hire a coach to ensure the skipper won't look "totally lost out there" etc.,etc. Can hardly wait to see what the critics will
recommend if she doesn't win the upcoming Meridian Grand Slam.
*During the broadcast on Sunday, Mike Harris, Kevin Martin and Brad Gushue agreed that Grand Slams are significantly more competitive and therefore far more difficult to win than any World or
Olympic event.
