The 2022 Scotties
So it's here and it starts with the favourite team's skip not being able to play because of a positive COVID test (https://twitter.com/Devin_Heroux/st...075523671040001). Apparently someone else had a positive pre-test too, name not revealed. Can't be Miskew's team as they're all there. All arrival tests apparently negative. What an awful blow for Fleury after a rough Trials final and disastrous provincials.
They say she could be back this weekend. Their opener is New Brunswick, which they would likely still be favoured to win though Crawford is capable of a top-tier curling and can't be dismissed. They then play Barker tomorrow night, similar situation. Then Birt on Sunday. Their first huge game is Monday versus Miskew. If Fleury is back by Sunday they might be OK but the price of losing any of these first three games is probably pretty high with the new format. Even 1 loss bumping them to second in the pool is the difference between a guaranteed play-off spot and not.
Fun!

I don't understand Curl Canada not saying who tested positive. It will be pretty obvious once play starts.

So if that holds then only one player tested positive. That's actually pretty incredible given Omicron and the number of asymptomatic cases. And Fleury's was about 2 weeks ago, meaning it was a known factor. So only one coach is a surprise, no players.
Predictions? Hard to argue against the favourites but with this playoff format it's hard to know. 2/6 top teams will be eliminated in a single game. I guess I root for McCarville?

Obviously I’m rooting for Fleury but this is a huge blow to start the event off. Selena Njegovan will skip tonight and until Tracy is back so hopefully she can pull out some wins for the team. She has improved a lot over the past few seasons so I’m excited to see how she does skipping. From A, I see Fleury, McCarville and either Carey/Miskew with Crawford being the dark horse. From B, Einarson and Walker should have no problems with maybe Zacharias/Duncan/St-Georges squeezing in as the third spot…

2 months ago the whole team would have been quarantined (disqualified). Common sense is starting to come through.
Except for our p.m. he gets a negative result and hides from his job. SMH!!!

Bad break for Fleury. Wonder if the spare is going to play 3rd or lead?

Their alternate is Robyn Njegovan, Selena’s sister-in-law. She’s playing third with Selena skipping. Interesting play.

So why did TSN start the telecast 30 minutes after the game actually started. Delayed start but scores are already posted here in CZ

Here too. Must be you. Better bring in Mudryk quick.

The game did start at 7:00 EST and was up on TSN then for me. Also I wish it was different circumstances but I am so not going to miss Russ for however many days he won't be there.

Not entirely in favour of this format.
I can see the last half of the round robin not meaning much for several teams, with only 3 of 9 in the playoffs half will be out by the 5th or 6th game.

Dear Cheryl:
No, Carey should not have tried the double in the end she gave up steal of 3. Even if she made it there was 99% chance of a steal of 1 and the draw only had to get close to the 4 foot so it was a no brainer call.
And no, broom placement is not their problem tonight, the entire team is sliding all over the map.
Sincerely,
Russ

Either was the right call if they’re made. Possibly get 2 if everything goes right with the double (triple).

huge loss for Fleury.
They might be on track for one of the biggest front/back season differences in history. This was the risk, though, of not having your actual team for the opening. Crawford is one of those teams that usually needs to warm up but they came out fairly strong and a hobbled Fleury couldn't match it. Hopefully Fleury is back tonight because their night game against Barker could go the same way: Barker is more than capable of putting a great game together and beating a 75% Fleury team.

No there was no triple available. The way the rocks were if she makes the double and sticks right there it's a steal of 1. The only way she gets 1 is if she hits the first rock super skinny and gets a bit of a roll forward off the second rock. The draw was the call all day.

Totally agree. The only hit that would score was a 1/8 or less and you're probably giving up a steal of 2 as often as scoring 1 in that scenario (by hitting too thin). The draw was not easy on straight ice and going wide but it was more likely to score. The problem was the miss on the first stone. She had an easy shot to give up 1 or 2 or a moderate shot to score 1. At that point she needed to score and made the right call.
Like all calls the problem was she missed it. By 6".
ETA: Vic just said Fleury looking at a Tuesday return. Maybe time to edit those fantasy pools.

We will have to agree to disagree. Watched it again today, and the triple was definitely there.
You play the double and roll in for one. Hopefully you hit it thin enough to get the triple.
At this level, the most likely outcome is 1 point either way.
