Vic tends to pronounce ot correctly more than most others. As for Canada finishing first despite only having hammer 3 times, it's what happens at the end of the game that is ultimately more important than what happens at the beginning of the game.

Really? Wow! Totally mind blowing info. I can’t believe it. ;-)

Just kidding. Of course I’m well aware of that. I’m simply highlighting it given the many discussions around here about how important hammer isn’t or is.

I feel for Germany. Losing out 9n DSC. That loss to Scotland is really boring them now. They lead the whole way and played a shifty final end

Exciting final 6 here. Good stories all around.

Our most likely finalists have evident stories: extending their own resumes as greatest of their generations. But everyone else is fascinating too if they medal or win:

Scotland - Patterson matching Mouat’s worlds (bronze or silver) or beating him to a championship.
Switzerland - Schwaller winning a silver or gold after all of De Cruz’s failed struggles to get into a final.
Italy - First world medal ever.
USA - chance to match (bronze) or beat Shyster’s best.

Or " Goo" has become a nickname and is pronounced that way. Gushue has said in previous interviews that he's so used to his name being mispronounced that it's just easier to go with it.

"we always said Guzh-ew not Goo-shoe"

https://twitter.com/BradGushue/stat...610303253827586
"Correct! I got tired of correcting and I’ve been called worse."

In other words, it'd be more correct to call him "the Guzh" instead of "the Goo".

I do. Not what certain posters say, I have them on ignore, but it's certainly part of curling to talk about the players themselves. Robo curling where the robots don't have names isn't a thing yet.

As an update for Mikkel Krause, yes, he did end up playing in all 12 round robin games, possibly the first alternate to have done so (but I could be wrong). He wasn't always in the starting lineup (e.g. he stepped in to replace Kasper Wiksten at half-time break against CAN, playing as vice at third), but he threw stones in every game.

On twitter, Team Edin pointed out that SWE was #1 on DSC at 2021 Europeans, 2022 Olympics, and 2022 World, with an average LSD of 11.92 cm.

https://twitter.com/TeamNiklasEdin/...561210591391746

This is one of many obvious ways why using average ala WCF is better than using cumulative ala Canada: it's easier to track and compare performance over several events that may not have the same number of games requiring LSD (10 teams at Europeans & Olympics, 13 teams at World).

There is really no defense to using cumulative ala Canada, even within a single isolated event, because teams may have played more games than others at various times, artificially inflating their numbers temporarily and obfuscating their true ranking compared to if average was used instead.

"I think we are the best team to ever play from the longevity that we've had and the success that we've had," Gushue said. "It's a hard argument for anybody else to make, so (a title here) would be icing on the cake for sure."

https://www.nsnews.com/national-spo...ionship-5247585

Interesting timing to make this boast, or maybe he says such things often and I haven't realised.

According to Strong on Twitter there was a longer discussion and Gushue was praising Ferbey, Martin, etc and emphasizing the the longevity point there. But Strong is…not curling’s…strongest…journalist so of course the article just puts the hot quote in and leaves all that out. I can’t find the tweet right now it might’ve been a reply.

ETA: found it. https://twitter.com/GregoryStrongCP...680765942747137

So...best Canadian men's team with the same lineup. Only two options imho: Ferbey or Gushue. Richardsons technically only won 3 Briers with the same team but sure. Comparing that era to now, though, is impossible so I won't.

So...Ferbey or Gushue? Ferbey won 4 in 5 years, 1 silver and 3 worlds over 5 years and then was done. Gushue has 4 Briers in 6 years with 1 silver and three 4ths in their 8 years together. He has 1 world gold + 1 silver (and 1 cancelled), He also has Olympic bronze and a whack of Grand Slams (hard to compare to Ferbey given his peak was at the start of the Slams). Overall I think it leans Gushue, but I'd say it's easier if he wins a second world gold this weekend.

I'd also suggest no curler talk about this with any journalist because it won't end well. The reward of manipulating the discussion for clicks will always outweigh ethics for the reporter.

ETA2: Sorry for double edits but apparently someone at CP reads this forum. LOL

"Put Guh and Zhoo back in Gushue, says Canadian skip after years of mispronunciation"

Guh-Zhoo.

Wow. You rarely hear someone having the arrogance to state 5h36 believe they're the greatest. Even if they think it they don't say it

Needless to say I disagree

Exactly my point. Strong admits on Twitter he left the context out and yet...nothing. He gets his clicks. "Journalism"

Does this discussion assume and give Gushue credit for skipping his first gold medal? If so, he played on team skipped by Russ Howard and was just a member of a winning team.

No. Gushue is specifically referring to the Gushue-Nichols-Gallant-Walker lineup.

I get your intent, but claiming the fourth rock thrower as just any member of the team is a bit dismissive.

Definitely not. I'd say parameters are same 4 men judged based on longevity and total accomplishments. And as I said it's either them or Ferbey, depending how you rate 3 Worlds vs. trials/Olympics/slams/more overall Brier success outside wins.

But of course we don't know the context, what he was asked, the nature of the discussion, etc. because the article is bad.

I think Nik Edin would have a few words about the best of the best w/ the longevity. Three Oly medals, multiple Worlds and other titles . . .

I didn't think this was an international discussion.

Meanwhile...it's unfortunate just 2/4 teams showed up for these qualifying games.

Yes, Niklas Edin himself won 3 Olympic medals, but Edin-Eriksson-Wranå-Sundgren only won 2.

I do agree that Edin-Eriksson-Wranå-Sundgren arguably has better resume than Gushue-Nichols-Gallant-Walker.

I think most people would agree that if the gold medal from the last 3 world championship had been won by one team, then that team is kind of "dominant" (for lack of better words) over the competition for that period of time.

Except that they were never "dominant" at any point in that run. And Canadian men's teams were never anything less then serious Gold medial threats every time. And remain so.
