Was thinking about some of the problems with the "no tick zone" rules, one thing Chelsea Carey said about corner guards and just the idea it removes skills from a shot a player used to make.

Try this instead:

ONLY guards on the centre line can be ticked.

1. Corner guard ticks automatically not allowed.

2. The skill for making ticks still exists as people will challenge their opponents to tick.

3. Throwing guards in those "must" steal ends now becomes getting it as close to the middle without touching the line. Creates intrigue and more options for how it plays out too.

4. It keeps the ends interesting. Having guards closer to the middle helps the excitement and risk factor in those extra ends. Drawing against a stone touching 4-foot versus 8 foot can be a big difference.

Personally, outside of mixed doubles power play defense, I haven't seen many corner guard ticks enough for it to be a potential problem. Also, team with hammer can still score 2+ without corner guards (see: John Shuster scores 5 vs Niklas Edin at 2018 Olympics), so I'm perfectly fine with WCF's 2022-2023 NTZ the way it's written now, which is already a massive improvement over the 2022 version.

Speaking of mixed doubles, I do like the idea of NTZ based on the dots, for both the center guard and corner guard power play ends. If those dots are universal enough, I also wouldn't mind using them for 4-person games. Mixed doubles have been in 2 Olympics already, and it's constantly growing, so I expect those dots to be installed on every curling sheets automatically, so they can be used even for 4-person games.
