Birthright added to Curling Canada residency rules

Curling Canada has update their residency rules to include province of birth as option for residency.

This change means Rachel Homan and Jennifer Jones no longer have to find loopholes in the process as well as open the door for many other players to consider their original province as option to play for.

This seems like a good compromise that continues to ensure players have connection to their provinces but also allows them to consider alternative options.

This might help the Eastern provinces...a maritime living in Alberta can now curl for the province of their birth.

I am Ok with this and if it aligns with how other sports are governed even better. We can't go back to the "old days" of requiring all 4 to be residing in the same province. That was fine many years ago but not in today's world. Just wondering though about something and I did not read all the details I must admit. How about someone like Jamie Sinclair from the US? She was raised in Canada and learned the game here I believe. Could she claim birth right or does this not apply to international players?

Sinclair has dual citizenship. She can curl for Canada anytime so yes birth province applies to her.

Well I did not know about her dual citizenship thanks. I'm thinking that if you don't have a dual citizenship, you would not be able to use the birth province provision. And I'm not thinking of anyone in particular that would want to do that anyway.

Fairly certain Sinclair was born in Alaska. Birthright would not pertain to her.

Jamie Sinclair was born in Alaska, so that’s where her US citizenship comes from. Her parents were in the Canadian Air Force. Her dad was training pilots for the US Air Force as part of an officer exchange program. iirc. Her parents both being Canadian is where her Canadian citizenship comes from. How that would connect into this new birthright rule for the Scotties, I don’t know, since she wasn’t born in a province. I think she was 2 or 3 when they moved back to somewhere in Ontario, where the family was and is normally based. So if she could claim a home province of some sort, Ontario would be the most logical.

All this is moot, though, as she remains in the US program, and I recall hearing her say that athletes like her competing in international competitions must wait three years before competing again if they want to change what country they compete for, So if she wanted to change countries now, she’d miss any chance to compete at the 2022 Olympics as we’re inside the three years already,

You know, I dont even know why they have "residency rules" anymore. Why not just come put and say it. " curl for whatever province you want". Dont live there, go to school there or work there?. Its okay, you have a grandma who luves there and you visit for 2 weeks ever summer. Good enough. We all know it's going there.
