Timing and ties rule changes alternatives
There's been much discussion lately about the rule changes that'll be tried at the Worlds, most of which don't seem to be very popular at the moment.
On the per-end timing, I'd like to see a different new rule tried, as I agree that it rushes the players too much and takes away one of the very things I come to watch for: the puzzles and the problem-solving amongst the team members. Still, I do like the goal of trying to take away one of the incentives teams have when they intentionally seek to blank an end from the get-go, which is time-banking. So, how about this instead... timing-per-half. Rather than 38 minutes for whole ten end game, do 19 minutes for the first five and another 19 for the back five. This way, any time-banking teams may try to do will only help for the first half. Also, give them one time out per half, but only one. If they don't spend their first half one, they don't get it in the second.
As for the tie-breaking rules, I don't like the point system that's been proposed. Still, if they really want to do away with extra ends in tie round robin games, I have another alternative: if you get to a tie in the tenth, look at the linescores of the two teams and pick a category of performance in that linescore that can be used as the tiebreaker. For example, you could add up the number of ends each team scored 2 or more with hammer or scored 1 or more without. If that still doesn't break the tie, make it just steal points. If that still doesn't work, ok, at that point, go to the draw shot at the start.
