Cassidy Blades With Two Big Upsets at Stu Sells Halifax
Cassidy Blades (photo: Curling Photos), from Halifax, NS, earned a huge victory in extra ends Wednesday evening at the Stu Sells 1824 Halifax Classic. Cassidy Blades and her U18 team out of the Halifax Curling Club are taking to the big stage this weekend as they play in the Stu Sells Halifax 1824 Classic. By Meredith McCullum Blades, backed by Steffi Atherton, Anna MacNutt and Lily Mitchell, entered this week as the underdog in a ladies event filled with tough competitors including Hearing Life Tour Challenge Tier Two Champs team Christina Black, 2024 Junior National Champs Allyson MacNutt, reigning Quebec Provincial champs Laurie St-Georges and top Scottish women's teams Fay Hednerson and Rebecca Morrison. Cassidy Blades, who came fourth at the Under-20 Canadian Championships in 2024, proved very quickly that her team should not be overlooked, despite their youth compared to the other teams, when she took down top seed Rebecca Morrison in her opening match of the event. Blades with hammer and secured a blank followed by a deuce in the first two ends. Morrison followed up with a single then steals of one in each of the fourth and fifth ends. Blades got back on the scoreboard in six with a single point to tie the game and then went ahead with a steal of one in the seventh. In the eighth end Morrison was forced to one, sending the game to extra end where Blades made a draw to the four foot against two to score her point and win the game 5-4. Stu Sells Halifax 1824 Classic: Blades vs Morrison Blades went on to lose to fellow Halifax team Allyson MacNutt in their second game, but bounced back with another upset over Scottish team Fay Henderson. Again Blades started with hammer but this time gave up a steal of one in the second before scoring a huge 3 in the third to go up 3-1. Henderson tied it up in the fourth with a deuce. The teams traded singles for the rest of the game to make it a 5-5 tie after 8 ends of play. Blades had the hammer in the extra end and was able to secure her point to win the game 6-5 and improve her record to 2-1. Blades plays Laurie St-Georges of Quebec and Ontario's Hollie Duncan in her next games as play continues at the Stu Sells 1824 Classic in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
