Dunstone Playoff Bound at Shorty
After starting 0-2, Winnipeg's Matt Dunstone ran of three straight wins and a strong shootout to sneak into the final 8. Dunstone, with B.J. Neufeld, Colton Lott, and Ryan Harnden, had a rough start to the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic. They opened with a 6-3 loss to Switzerland's Marco Hoesli and then dropped a 6-3 decision to Scotland's Ross Whyte. Fortunately for Dunstone, the pre-game draw totals of 22.2 and 15.9 centimetres were useful and left the team with a pathway to qualifying. From there, Dunstone got to work, taking a 9-4 decision from Woodstock's Mark Kean, then winning 9-4 over Denis Cordick of North Halton. Shootouts of 24.1 cm against Kean and then covering the pin against Cordick left Dunstone with a four-shot total of 66.2 going into their last game. Teams drop the worst of their five draw shot sores in the total. Dunstone finished off round-robin play with a 6-4 win over Wouter Gosgens of the Netherlands to get to 3-2. The 70.5 cm draw shot to open the game ended up being dropped. The result was good enough for Dunstone to finish in the top 8, where they face Scotland's Bruce Mouat in the quarterfinals. Italy's Joel Retornaz is playing Xiao-ming Xu of China in the same half of the 8-team single knockout championship round, while Ross Whyte of Scotland plays Felix Asselin of Montreal and last weekend's winner of the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, Yannick Schwaller of Switzerland plays Scotland's Kyle Waddell. QUARTERS: Mouat vs. Dunstone Games begin at 8:30 am Eastern Time on Sunday, with the championship final playing at 3:30 pm on COGECO's YourTV network across Ontario. All games will be streamed with fixed camera views with links available through CurlingZone's scoreboard. |
