Dunstone into win column at Shorty
Winnipeg's Team Matt Dunstone (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) won their first game Friday night to stay in contention in Cornwall. By: Cameron Sallaj The Matt Dunstone rink, comprised of Dunstone, B. J. Neufeld, Colton Lott and Ryan Harnden got their 2024-25 season underway this weekend at the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic in Cornwall, Ontario. In their first two games, the team faced two European rinks who are both competing in their fourth event of the season. Following identical 6-3 losses to both Marco Hosli (Glarus, SUI) and Ross Whyte (Stirling, SCO), the team looked to get into the win column in game three as they took on Mark Kean (Woodstock, ON). Starting without the hammer, it was another slow start for Team Dunstone as they immediately conceded two to Team Kean. They were able to tie the score at two-all with a deuce in the second, however. In the third, the Winnipeg squad found their groove, sitting four on the Ontario rinks final shot. Needing a hit-and-stick to score, Kean's final stone did not curl enough and rolled out of the rings, giving the Dunstone rink their biggest lead of the event yet. Not going away so easily, Team Kean counted two in the fourth end to tighten the score to 5-4. They then forced Dunstone to one in the fifth to trail by two with three ends remaining. Facing a crowded house on his last rock in six, Mark Kean's final draw pulled up short, resulting in another steal of three. This was followed by handshakes with Team Dunstone counting their first win of the event in dominant fashion. AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic - Draw 12 - Matt Dunstone vs Mark Kean: With two round robin games left to play, the Winnipeg rink will need to win out to have any chance of making the playoffs in Cornwall. On Saturday, they will face Denis Cordick at 11:00 AM ET before closing out against the Netherlands' Wouter Gosgens at 5:00 PM ET. Wins in both games combined with a good last stone draw total might allow the 2023 Brier silver medalists to squeak into one of the eight spots in the men's playoff round beginning Sunday.
