By: Cameron Sallaj Reunited with their skip Sayaka Yoshimura, the Fortius curling team dominated the round robin at the Wakkanai Midori Challenge Cup, the first stop on the Hokkaido Curling Tour. Backed up by third Yuna Kotani, second Kaho Onodera, lead Anna Ohmiya and alternate Mina Kobayashi, Yoshimura is playing in her first event since the 2022-23 season after being on maternity leave for the entirety of the 2023-24 season. In their first game of the season, the team from Sapporo wasted no time getting to work, taking down Philoseek Aomori's Miori Nakamura 6-2. They then opened their next game with a score of five against Mayu Minami, going on to an 8-2 victory. Their third game of the event was more of the same as Team Yoshimura recorded three three-enders to down Kohane Tsuruga 9-6. In their final round robin game, the team trailed 2-0 after three ends but rallied back to defeat Mika Okuyama 7-4 to finish a perfect 4-0 in the round robin. Wakkanai Midori Challenge Cup - Draw 10 - Yoshimura vs Okuyama: Team Yoshimura, who finished the 2023-24 season with a 61-22 win/loss record, are now into the final four of the Wakkanai Midori Challenge Cup for a third consecutive year and will look to defend their title from both 2022 and 2023. In their semifinal match, they will take on Hokkaido Bank's Momoha Tabata (3-1; Sapporo) while in the other game, Chubu Electric Power's Ikue Kitazawa (4-0; Nagano) battles STRAHL's Mayu Minami (2-2; Sapporo). On the men's side of play, defending Japanese champion Shinya Abe (3-1; Sapporo) takes on Kohsuke Hirata (3-1; Kitami) while TM Karuizawa's Yusuke Morozumi (4-0; Karuizawa) goes against Takumi Maeda (3-1; Tokoro).
