By: Cameron Sallaj Draw 11 of the 2025 AMJ Players' Championship celebrated Korea Day with all three Korean teams in action Thursday night. While Kim Eun-jung faced off against Xenia Schwaller in Pool A, Gim Eun-ji and Ha Seung-youn met in an all-Korean match in Pool B. Starting with hammer, it was Team Ha who got on the board first, swiping two in the opening end. This lead did not last long, however, as Gim took three in the second to inch ahead. Ha then got two back in three before Gim matched with two in the fourth, taking a 5-4 lead at the halfway point. In the second half, the scoring slowed down with only single points being seen across the board. The Chuncheon based Ha rink tied the score with one in five before Uijeongbu's Gim went back ahead with one in six. The two-time defending national champions then stole one in the seventh to take a two-point lead coming home. An unfortunate runback on Gim's first rock in eight allowed Ha Seung-youn a draw for two to send the game into an extra end. Her attempt was light, however, and she only managed to count one, giving Team Gim the 7-6 win and their first victory of the event. It's been a tale of two halves this season for the Gim rink of Eun-ji, Kim Min-ji, Kim Su-ji, Seol Ye-eun and Seol Ye-ji. After winning the Korean Championship last June, the team was red-hot to begin the tour season, scoring victories in Calgary and Beaumont. However, after a silver medal finish at the Pan Continental Championship, their momentum ran out as they missed three consecutive Grand Slam playoffs, the first time they had done that since the 2021-22 season. Since then, though, the team has been on the upswing with a gold medal at the Asian Winter Games in February and a strong World Championship which saw them finish just off the podium. As the two-time defending champions in Korea, they will be the team to beat at the Korean Olympic Trials in two months' time with the winner qualifying straight for the Milano-Cortina Games. Now sitting 1-3, Gim will need a win in their final round robin game against Momoha Tabata and some fortunate results for a chance at a tiebreaker in Toronto. With the loss, Ha is now 2-2 and also looking for a win in their last game against Silvana Tirinzoni. Elsewhere in Thursday night's Korea Day draw, Team Kim Eun-jung (3-0; Gangneung, KOR) gave fans lots to cheer for by dispatching Team Xenia Schwaller (0-4; Zurich, SUI) 9-2. Team Rachel Homan (3-1; Ottawa, ON) also won their third game 5-3 over Team Kerri Einarson (2-2; Gimli, MB) and Team John Epping (4-0; Sudbury, ON) locked up the first men's playoff spot with a 5-1 win over Team Joel Retornaz (0-4; Cembra, ITA). The next draw from the 2025 AMJ Players' Championship gets underway at 8:00 am ET Friday with streaming of every game available on HomeTeamLive. |
