Canada and Switzerland to Face off in World Final

Canada and Switzerland won their respective semi final matches (photo: Curling Canada) Saturday evening in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The two powerhouse teams will play each other in the final Sunday evening as the 2024 Women's World Championships come to a close.

By Meredith McCullum

In the first semi final, Canada's team Homan (1) took on Korea's Eunji Gim (4), the team they had suffered their first loss of the tournament to just one day previous. Canada got on the board first with a deuce in two, but the lead was short lived as Korea scored three in the third. The teams then traded singles back and forth for the next four ends.

Canada scored two points in the all important eighth end to go up 6-5. They put pressure on Korea in the ninth and looked like they were going to get a force, but two incredible shots from Eunji Gim earned her team two points and a 7-6 lead going into the final end. Canada's lead Sarah Wilkes, who shot 99% for the game, set the end up well as she had every end previous, and Canada had all the momentum in the tenth. Rachel Homan had a nose hit for the win and made no mistake, securing the home team a spot in the gold medal game.

In the other semi final, team Tirinzoni of Switzerland (2) took on team Constantini (3) of Italy. The two teams were neck and neck through the whole game. They exchanged singles through the first half of the game, tied 2-2 after five ends. Switzerland's front end had higher numbers the whole way through compared to Italy, but Stefania Constantini kept her team in the game early with numerous clutch shots.

The first deuce of the game came from Switzerland in the seventh end to put them up by two points. Italy followed up with a single in the ninth, but it would be Switzerland with hammer in the final end up by one point. Italy put pressure on the Swiss team, but fourth Alina Patz made a beautiful shot on her last to eliminate Italy's stone, scoring two and securing Switzerland a berth in the gold medal game.

Before the final, Itlay will take on Korea in the bronze medal game at 11am Atlantic time. Neither team has won a medal at World's before, so fans can expect a fierce battle the whole way through.

The gold medal game will begin at 5pm Atlantic time Sunday evening. In their earlier matchup this week, Homan came out on top by a score of 8-5. Tirinzoni and Homan have played each other many times over the years and are the top two ranked teams in the world, with phenomenal talent at each position. Switzerland is in search of a record setting fifth straight world title, while home team Homan will be looking to replicate their last world championship appearnace in 2017 and bring home another gold medal for Canada.
